Any Idea How Many Knives are "Born" at CRK on any given day?

Ultimately I would like to have Sebenzas that share my, and each of my kids birthdays (days anyway, I am too old and one son was born on a Sunday so the year won't match) to pass down to them some day and I am curious how many there are out there of each date. I recently saw one with my birthday sell but I missed it and it was not a style that I am particularly chasing so it got me thinking that there may not be another one out there with the date I want in the style I prefer.

Good question...I often thought something similar. And like you, I missed out on a b-day knife. :( Maybe some other members will have useful information.

Good question but I bet that's the kind of info they don't share freely. Just say that because a lot of companies don't really advertise their output capacity.

I always check as well. I try to keep am eye out for others too. I almost suggested making that thread a sticky in the CRK For Sale Forum or in this forum.

I think that would be an excellent idea. As I said before I missed a Damascus with my birthday but it was a UG and I don't think I could bring myself to carry one of those for whatever reason so I wasn't too upset but i definitely cruise the FS forum too much hoping to find that perfect deal for my first CRK.

I like the idea of a birthday sticky at the top of the sales section! As for your original question- I bet the daily output depends a lot of the types of knives they are working on during a given day.

Does anyone know what are the chances that if you had a knife made would they possibly "finish" it on a specific day? Obviously a future date. Any thoughts?

They are nearly 100% if you contact CRK, order directly from them, and your selected date is a normal business day for them.

I keep trying to catch one in the wild...the closest I have come was an annual that asking price was 3x what I was willing to pay. I probably would not carry one of those anyway...just not my style.

Great question. I had thought of this but never asked anybody.I am going to try to get one in the wild for my youngest son's actual birthday but I think I will go the other route for myself and my oldest since he was born on a Sunday. Thanks for the info

Just heard back via an email today from Heather, no go. I asked about a specific date (during their normal work schedule) and was told that was not possible. They never know what date the knives would be finished on. Not exactly helpful. :(

That is a shame. It seems that a few things have changed around CRK lately.

Are you ordering something exotic?

I was trying to order what I didn't realize was a CGG, my mistake. But with what Heather told me, now I don't feel like ordering anything if they won't help out with the birthdate. I might as well keep trying to catch one in the wild. For a semi-custom knife maker, this isn't what I had expected. Really disappointed.

Respecfully, I would say your expectations are misguided. CRK is a production knife maker, not a custom or "semi custom" knife maker. You cannot order a Sebenza born on a certain date any more than any Spyderco or Buck. They are made in massive batches that are scheduled around production realities, and demand. You can imagine the chaos that would ensue if they offered knives born on certain days. I understand and respect their reasons, and am ok with that.

I guess I will just wait til next year. The date falls on a Monday so hopefully I will start seeing some in the wild not long after. I am seeing lots for sale with the days before and after my birthday that happened earlier this year, just got unlucky that it was on a weekend.

I don't feel that I am misguided completely. If they work on a 3-4 month backorder all the time, then how hard would it be to create an UG with specific points. And if I ordered it "well in advance" that should give them even more breathing room. And unlike Spyderco or Buck or any other production knife manufacturer who don't offer "birth date" cards, this shouldn't be as much of an issue as it seems to be. Everything I read is how a customer pleasing company they are, how is what I'm asking any different? Catching a specific date in the wild is truly an art, or damn near impossibility. IMHO

I was just thinking it would be really cool if they did offer it. My assumption was they would build the knife whenever they felt like it and simply date/send on the day you requested if you ordered far enough in advance. I am not totally surprised that they don't offer this service though as it seems like an enormous headache for a large operation.
