Don't get me wrong you would likely get some great looking scales from it, it has some nice figure to it, its the size and shape that says lamp to me ;0)

For $2 You have a cazillion scales all dried and ready to use. It sure reminds me of a small piece I had not so different that was oak.

I agree. It does look similar to redwood.

Probably best to keep as is. If you cut it up the bug holes will likely go throughout the piece.
