I would have to see a larger picture of the numbers, but if you looked at the stamped "camillus" logo on the top knife , you'll notice that the sanding marks show a grit pattern or a patina pattern that hits the broad surfaces of the steel but not the lettered portions, showing that the letters are pressed inward with the edges of the being out of the reach of the sand paper. If they had been cut into the steel, the edges would be level with the surface, so the grit pattern wouldnt be disrupted in this way.
and on the bottom knife, wich is at a different angle to the light, shows dark and light reflections indicating that they have rounded edges, rather then a sharp edge that would be produced by an eengraver
The numbers however appear paler, without the heavy dark spots that would indicate depth of the marking. They appear to be more of a disruption to the sanding pattern then a deep gouge or a pressed mark. If it was pressed, it may have been pressed much much lighter (though very even looking).
I have no idea if anything I just said is true, thats just what it looks like from the photos .
