I was reading "The Weapons and Spirit of the Japanese Warrior". It makes a brief reference to "strange or unusual... saya".
"...the kotsubuire-saya had a small draw built into the inside to carry coins. Also for storing coins was the shirigane-saya at the butt end which, according to one theory, acted as a balancing weight for the shorter blade."
No images. My google-fu fails me in trying to learn more about this construction. Does anyone know any other terminology, images, or any other helpful tips to learn more about these?
