hey all, just found out uncle sam will be moving me to guam in june, i am looking forward to it generally, but am scared that there will not be any space for me to set up any kind of shop at all, as i am trying to finally get my garage cleared enough so i can forge. Main question is since i am a novice it would be nice to find like minded individuals with a knowledgeable brain to pick, locally. Any thoughts?, also any advice from those who live currently in guam or have done so in the past would be awesome, thanks!

Hafa adai!

I'm not from Guam, but my mother is. I don't know any knifemakers there, though. I can tell you that you'll enjoy the food!

I left guam right after the big typhoon wrecked the place. I went from Guam to Coronado, Ca. What a rude awakening from the nice clear warm waters of Guam to the cold, cloudy, murky waters of southern california. Get you some quality snorkeling gear now. Coral booties, gloves and get dive certified. You will be in the area of some of the best diving around the world and will hate yourself later for not taking advantage of it. Will you be on the navy or air force base?

awesome, jimmy i will be there on the air force base for a 3 year stint and am already looking at dive gear, only thing got me tweaking now is, since i will probably live on base and there are no garages, where the heck do i set up shop??,struggling to get the space i need here from the missus, lol.

diving at the air force base sucks. Horrible currents and they had an area roped off that was for swimming and diving only that wasn't bigger than a pool at a typical hotel. Or at least it did when I was there. Go to the naval station and go to the spanish steps. It's a good place for children as well. Good snorkeling off gun beach and sharks hole. Learn how to swim with the ripe tides and not against or gun beach will eat your lunch. Listen to the port briefs about the currents and don't go walking on the coral reef by yourself or you may not come back. Only saw one tiger shark the whole time in Guam but lots of barracuda and one that was bigger than me. That one ended my snorkeling for the day. The only places on base as I recall where the auto hobby shops. I'm not sure if you can rent a space anymore. Check those out. Some guys were able to rent a space long term for vehicle restoration. The air force base hobby shops put ours to shame and we were pretty envious of you guys for that. Other than that you will have to move out of the base. Everything is expensive in Guam because everything has to be shipped out there. Get to know the local's too. I was there for 18 months and fell in love with the people. Only place I know where the entire villages stop everything to have a party and invite all the passerby's to the parties. Great place.

Hey Kevin,

I'm not in Guam, nor do I have familiarity with the military to know what your rights or privileges might be for a shop space, but...

I am in the tropics in Hawaii. I have set up (actually am still working on my one at home) three shops so far here, all of which have been or are under tarpaulin canopies. Well, I have one shop with two forges, four anvils, a swage block and two post vises set up under patio umbrellas for my high school forge classes. The point I'm trying to make is, it might not take much if you can get some square footage to use.

All the best, Phil

awesome y'all i really appreciate the info, and jimmy i don't blame you , that barracuda probably would have witnessed me walking on water! Phil, i am definitely going to check out what i can and can't get away with, but one way or another ill be making knives, or knife shaped objects there if i only have a file, hand drill and a dremel!
