I want to buy a new knife to carry in NYC. I need one with a very strong detent so the blade does not fall out with force.

3.75" is my max for length. And a $200-$250 limit.

Detent strength can really vary in production knives. The tightness of the pivot will also affect the ability to flick out the blade.

Since you don't specify any styles or other preferences, I say buy whatever you like. Just don't have it clipped to your pocket or otherwise readily visible.

Assuming you're concerned about NYC knife laws, I don't think that even a very strong detent would stop a very determined police officer.

The ZT 0450 comes to mind given the price, blade length, and fairly stiff detent. To me it makes for a perfect flipper but I am not sure if that's exactly what you're looking for.

This is sound advice. I like a strong detent on my pocket knives. That said, even the ones I own with a strong one I can still flip the blade out like a gravity knife if I really try. Best to tighten the pivot down so they really can't be flicked open. Still though, if you are relying on the blade not flying out to keep you out of trouble if an NYC cop catches you with a knife I think you might have lofty expectations.

only knives that can be legally carried in Ny are: swiss army , uk penknife, or the case sodbuster,jr ...

please dont carry a delica, my delica was taken away frm me by a NYC police officer ,,delicas are locking blade ,,any locking blade will get you arrested in NYC

From what I've read, cops there will open them partially ie past the detent then flick them open, and then you lose it and are cited

Look at the Boker Anso Haddock. No stud or hole with best detent on any production I have held. Ceramic ball.

I have a new UKPK...have never carried it, and probably won't unless we take a trip "through" New York State. It's unfortunate that you have to drive through New York in order to sample some Maine lobster and a visit to LLBean. I'm not fond of big cities...

I have friends that are NYPD officers and the advice they gave me was don't carry a locking folder in NYC but if you must then keep it completely concealed with no clip showing, if an officer finds it during a search NEVER say it for self defense!! They can and will turn any locking folder into a gravity knife so A slip joint or small fixed blade is the best option.

Just move. Why would you want to even try to carry a knife in a Communist place like that? Just carry some fingernail clippers or something and save your money for a U-Haul truck.

Carry two knives. One regular, like a delica, and one ACTUAL old school gravity knife. Then when they determine the delica to be a gravity knife you'll have a good example for contrast

"No officer, THIS is a gravity knife!"

Be sure to deploy it all fast and aggressive like. Will make your point stronger. I'm sure they'll get it and give your delica back.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think right now I will just continue to not bring a knife into the city. I don't live there but commute there weekly.

Judging from the comments if J do get a knife it will probably be a slipjoint of some sorts. I was originally thinking of ZT knives since I have heard the have strong detents. Any experience?
