I spotted one on a Google image pic, but I don't believe I saw one in the Izula thread. Have any of you wrapped your Izula with leather instead of paracord? If so, can you post pics and describe the feel?
i've got mine wrapped with leather right now. there are a couple pics in the wrapped izula thread, should be on the last few pages. there's more grip than paracord, and it looks pretty good, i think. goes well with my KSF sharpshooter izula sheath.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking when I saw the one on Google. Seemed reminiscent of a leather stacked handle to me. Turned it at once into a very rustic looking tool. I'll go see if those pics are still out there. Thanks!
You can find old leather braided belts in many thrift stores (the 90's are over!).
Cut off the very tip and the part next to the buckle and you end up with 3,4, or 5 strands of genuine leather for wrapping, lashing, etc.
Soak the leather with you wrap it and it'll tighten as it dries, too (same with 550 cord!).
I picked up some leather to wrap with the other day but don't know when I'll get around to it. I love the feel of leather but really like my wrap to be as thin as possible.
did this Tuesday but haven't had the chance to post pics. did some work on my izula since the last time i posted pics; convexed the edge, stripped and mirror polished the blade n added the leather wrap
Before (right after I got the knife) [sorry so blurry]:
After:
I am going to re-wrap the knife with another piece - this one was dry and broke when I was trying to cinch down the finishing knot really hard... I would prefer a bit of a tail, but the leather wrap feels much better than 550 cord.
If it doesn't turn out well, I may just get some new leather - this was from an old leather woven belt. Strips are almost same diam as para cord, but you can really dress the wraps and knots well as the leather will compress a bit and hold it's shape really well.
I just did another wrap - a strip of leather with leather conditioner and mink oil on it - became much more supple. (Mine still didn't turn out as nice as Eshu's!).
Man, I love the idea of using that friction tape, but I had some on a baseball bat years ago and it was too tacky feeling for my tastes (so tacky that bits of string and dust were always sticking to it). But maybe that was just cheap tape from the '90s. How does it feel on your Izula, jvthor? I'm pretty temped to give it a try.
