Any love for Northwoods knives?

Agreed. My Queen-made Northwoods Whittler, which doesn't resemble any Queen I've ever seen in terms of pattern, materials or finish, all of which are top-notch:

Ferrari red scales... Wharnecliffe main! Beautiful

My limited experience with Northwoods has been very good. I had an Indian River Jack that I gave away because the quality was good and I felt that it was a gift worthy knife.

I have these two Railsplitters that are very well made knives. I also have a Stag version but I don't have a good picture of it. I believe these are all made by Queen. While Queen's quality can sometimes be spotty, my experience with Northwoods has been great.

I had the forum stockman, got it in a trade. Not a bad little knife really. That's long gone. I have a Northwoods large stockman, Queen made I believe, that I carried for a time. Might toss it back in the pocket. The stockmans are getting a little jealous of all the pocket time the trappers and two blade jacks are getting :D.

I have the 2008 Traditional Forums Northwoods Medium Stockman - never again. I realize GEC makes the new #25's.

Glad you guys are liking the Northwoods.

A little history.

Dave Shirley started the company. He had Queen make his knives. He was always dodgy about who made his knives....but they were Queen. He would ask them to do a few more steps to make the F&F better. It worked. :)

A few years back, Dave Shirley was dying of cancer. He called me to see if I was interested in purchasing Northwoods and Scagel. Long story short, we did.

Since that time, we have done some changing to the line. We took the fixed blades out of Northwoods because we couldn't find someone to make them to the quality we wanted and at a price we were comfortable with. We focused on folders.

We wanted to shift the focus to be traditional folders, but with some kind of significant upgrade--steel, grinds, sheath, etc. We have been honest about who is doing the work to make our knives. Both Great Eastern and Queen have done work for us. We have also called on Bark River to do some grinding for us. The end result is a product we have been very proud of.

We have come out with several new knives since then. The latest being the Bullet Jack. It has been fun!

Scagel is another story for another day. :)

I know I like 'em, this "mini-moose" is one of my favorites:

Comparing it to a BF 2008 Traditionals stockman also made by Northwoods, they're have a very similar frame.

And I have a couple more, like this ivory Dogwood:

The GEC made Northwoods Scagel Fruitport:

I also like the Indian River Jack, I picked one up that has the "Scagel hole" rather than a nail nick. Nice ebony, my only beef is a small gap in one of the liners. But it's the only one of my Northwoods that is like that. And I didn't know the 2008 BF stockman had burnt tips until I read it here. I guess I was so excited to find one that I just grabbed it.

I guess I need to add those to my "take pics" list.

I sure like those new little jacks too, all the covers look nice, though I'd probably go for the cocobolo like on my little moose.

If the GEC made Scagel branded knives count then yes I love them.

BTW, I am guessing, but is the shield an arrowhead and either way what is the significance historically of this shield?

Thanks!

Just wanted to throw my two cents in also for a great knife.

My wife just bought me a northwoods for a gift (she bought it because the stag looked prettiest- she was right). I love it, its a great knife. Fit and finish is great, among the best I've seen. Action is excellent- smooth and crisp on both blades. Zero blade play, no gaps, and great looking popcorn stag.

Anyway I couldn't be happier with it, its been in my pocket right along side a burnt stag geppetto whittler- also excellent and a gift from my brother.

Here is the nicest Northwoods knife I've ever seen. Photos are by SunnyD, who owns the knife and has posted the images here several times:

What a tasteful, classy little knife.

And here's another, this one in stag, originally posted by member RobbW:

Sure wish Northwoods would do another run of these!
