Any maker interested make me a hollow handle survival knife?

Our very own Ray Laconico has been guilty recently of catching the '80's nostalgia bug and building some very nice looking hollow handle knves. I'm not sure if he has gotten that out of his system, but you can ask him:D

If you have a lot of patience you can order a Randall Model 18.

Isnt there one that is around $400 bucks made by a guy from South Africa called the bushman or something? It is one piece so there wouldnt be a weak point on the knife where the blade meets the handle.

thanks to all for the help.

compliments to B Finnigan, very very interesting and nice blade you made:thumbup:

I've thought of a pretty solid way to create a hollow handle knife, have to draw it up :D

edit, here we go.
I don't know if anyone makes hollow handle knives this way, but for a forger it oughtant be much of a problem.

1) cut out a blank that looks almost like a fat tuning fork,
2) heat and twist the forks to run perpendicular to the blade,
3) find a hollow steel cylinder and a solid steel cylinder the same diametre, use the solid cylinder as a form to hammer the forks into a cradle, then weld the hollow cylinder in to form the handle (dark grey bit) then wrap with paracord. in an emergency para cord can be unwrapped to be used to tie other things up and to help survive.

To have a guard on, thread the outer of the forks once the hollow cylinder is welded in, tap the inside of the guard piece and screw on then weld in place before wrapping the handle.

Should I copyright or patent thuis method of making hollow handle knives? :D ;)

I did a step by step photo diary of the build and all of the problems I encountered over on the Primal Fires forum.

Any chance of a link or posting the photo diary here? I'd really be interested.

I searched but I couldn't find it & primal fires forum seems to be offline..

thanks!

Kiwi, I really like your idea and it is a great starting point. I would machine the end of the hollow tube so that it butted up against the main part of the blade tig weld that joint also.

I do not see how a PROPERLY welded and stress relieved joint where handle joins blade could be a weak point.

I would be more in favor of using a qualitly braided fishing line in the 200# test range to be lashed on the outside the handle, then varnished than I would paracord.
