Any negatives to high temp normalizing W2?

You are more then welcome to send them to me. I will run them through my tester and give you the results. Only take a few min and would be happy to do it for you.

I do 20min @ 1650, then 3 more sessions, each lower, down to 1425-50 (not in shop, so don't have my recipe). I use Aldo's W2, stock removal and have ordered several batches and have had no issues good grain, approx 67 as quenched in P50, and 62-63 post temper.

Thanks Warren, JT ,Stacy

I don't have a hardness tester yet, that is why I asked about the high heat. I figured if it didn't hurt anything and all it cost me was a few more grain refinement cycles, that would be the safest route. I plan on switching to the 26c3 in the future but I wanted to use what I had. Thanks again for the help.

I would like to do some coupons to dial in my heat treat. If any of you folks with a hardness tester and an eye for grain refinement would be willing to take a look for me please let me know.

I’m in Canada too. It’s about $20.00 to send a package of samples cross border, so not too bad.

Has anyone tried 1650’ with a longer soak, maybe 40 minutes?

Hoss

Not with the W2, but I did that with the 52100 (long soak at 1550f) Didn’t work. I don’t have any of the affected W2, so I’m no help there.

Thanks JT, I will send you a pm.

Thank you for offering to help out, Warren, I appreciate it. JT is a little closer so I am going to take him up on his offer.

If for any reason JT can’t do it, I’d be glad to test it for you. I used to use their w2 a lot until I was informed of all the problems, I won’t buy from them anymore. The 26c3 from AKS has been great though!

I just treated two Aldo W2 blades:

1600f 20 min air cool, repeat at 1475f, 1450f, 1425f for 10 min each and air cool
harden at 1460f 13 min Parks 50 8 sec then water....getting 68Rc as quenched....tempering now.
