While stationed at Ft. Hood-- I was shooting suckers at Belton Lake dam/spillway in Texas with my bow when a fish and game officer approached me. He asked me to come with him. I was a bit confused- I asked if I was doing anything wrong - he said "nope". We walked up by the damn and spill way. He finally asked, "Do you think you can hit that?" He pointed down to the biggest catfish I had ever seen swimming. I replied, "Sure, but it's a game fish and a big fine". He agreed I wasn't going to get in trouble. It was about 50 foot downward shot. The fish was still between the concrete 'outlet'. A guy had hooked it and was snagged on something. It took 2 tries, but I hit it in the head. It took five of us to get it out. That dam fish (see what I did-damn fish) was as big as me! They took pics and put it in the paper because it was so big. I didn't get any credit because it's illegal to shoot game fish with a bow. But it was exciting!!
With that being said... here in the midwest we catch smallmouth and walleye in the fast, cold water by the damn. Everything else is cats, suckers and drum. We use creek chubs, crawfish, and stink bait.
