Any of you Hogs into HDR photography?

Canons objectives are slightly cheaper but Nikkor makes excellent objectives that produce sharp, very sharp pictures.

I tried something a little different than HDR for this. I also tried HDR. I think I can do much better with traditional methods...maybe I am doing a lot wrong though. I am just trying some new software and I have never been good with Post Processing (Thats probably a good reason to stick to the basics of photography for me)

A little different approach on the pic above.

I still feel I can get better pics with a single exposure (Below for example)

Anywho, I find both HDR and Exposure Fusion a little disappointing. I am going to try it with some high contrast landscapes. Let you know Mike.

I don't think HDR is meant as a catch-all technique for all shooting conditions. Sometimes it looks awesome, other times...not so much.

I'm definitely liking your B&W photos, richstag. I've always wanted to learn how to take good B&W photos but it's something that's always eluded me.

I took these photos in HDR yesterday to show off my new XM-18. I definitely like the results more than my first attempt at the technique the other day.

Here's what I got. These were also posted in the EDC carry thread.

I find with HDR it's rather tricky finding that balance between natural and unnatural. Something I'll keep working at.

Yeah, I will keep trying it out and I agree. It took me about ten thousand times more work to get a crappy end result then just shooting it right in the first place though.

Like you said I am sure it has its place, just not sure if its in my bag of tricks or not.

I am interested to see what I can come up with for HIGH contrast landscapes though.

Nice XM btw :)

I don't use HDR to capture every little detail and make it ultra realistic looking, I like HDR because it gives everything a fake almost cartoonish detail look.

Example from the internet that's not mine.

Here's a recent one of mine that I took of a friend of mine, it almost doesn't look real -

I don't want ultra real detail, I want it looking like you just stepped out into a slightly different world.

On a side note Mike, right now I am just trying out the techniques. I want to see how much I can actually extend my dynamic range. Once I have a feel for that I am going to venture into another world if I can ;-)

I tried as many as 15 bracketed exposures and as few as 2 and most of the scenerios in between. Just playing around like you are. :)

Right... the somewhat surrealistic uses of HDR are the interesting ones, IMO.

I hear what u guys r saying..."It's all about that effect"...but if u r not interested in detail then why HDR? Extending dynamic range is extending ur level of detail. Both in highlights and shadow detail.

I am just saying, to me HDR has to be about the detail or what is the point of combining three or more of the same photo, just at AE bracketed increments.

Hopefully now that I have a feel for how much this technique will extend the DR I can move on to the special effects of HDR.
