I tried to heat treat my knife tonight. I don't think it work I was not able to get the whole blade an even heat. The hot spot in my home made charcoal forge was not big enough to heat it all at the same time. I am hoping there is some one in my area that would be willing to help me out. I have the blade in the oven tempering, I am not sure if I would need to normalize it or could I just reheat treat it

well I rework the forge this morning, I think it worked much better. I got the whole knife (except a little bit at the end of the tang) an even glowing red and non-magnetic at several points along the blade. It is in the oven now.

I think I made this one work but I would still like some help with the next ones I do. I have look at sending it off but at around $25 per blade it is a little more than I can spend. If there is no one in Vegas that could help me out would any one be willing to let me ship out 2 blades to them. If so please message me and we can talk about compensation for you time and work.

Thank you

Mistake in buying 1095?? 1095 is one of the best simple C steels out there. Hot works like butter...very forgiving in heat treat and boy it can cut. My question is where did you get it? That stuff is getting very difficult to find nowadays..

Hello:

Jantz has 1095?? Wow..I've only been doing business with those folks for the last 35 years or so...never once did I look at their steels...then again I order steel by the ton (literally) and I use a whole lot of 1095, 1060, 5160, L-6 and a couple more.

1095 can be tricky but it isn't as hard to HT as alot of folks think it is..IF ya know all the subtle little tricks in doing it that is....still you will get some retained Austenite but you will get that with almost any steel that has > 80 pts C content. But what do I know?? I am just an old hammerhead...

Thanks, I think I will do the heat treat my self. I think this first one turned out ok. Once I get it all don't and a final edge on it I will see how it holds up. I still have enough steel to make two more knives. I am hoping to find some one relatively close to me to help me cut them out. I have all the tools I need to shape them but cutting the first one out was a pain. and I think it really effected my final product. I had such a rough cut on it, it was really hard to get all the angles right when they start so bad. I just need to borrow a band saw or some thing.

Check the pawn shops around vegas. You can usually find a decent used porta-band from milwaukee or dewalt, buy you a table from swag off road. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_BV7_OEttI&feature=youtu.be I did that and love the little thing. It doesn't take up much room. I bought the foot pedal as well but it's of pretty low quality and I don't expect it to last much longer. Don't forget craiglist either. Lots of tools for sale their as well. I got this weekend off if you want to come by my shop and check out the setup.
