Hi fellas, I have been eying up the Stretch CF ZDP-189 for sometime now.
Am about to pull the trigger, and click add to shopping cart.
It is a pretty pricey Spydie, So I thought I best ask if you guys are pleased with your purchase? Also have you had any sharpining issues, with the ZDP? as some seem to say its a bugger to sharpen.
Thanks,

dave

I love mine, especially since I reshaped it a bit. The only problems I have had with sharpening ZDP I attribute to learning curve. The steel is hard enough to feel very different on a diamond hone, which fooled me into using too much pressure. Once I got past that, I had no more trouble.

Thanks for the reply :D

So... using really light pressure on the diamond is the ticket then?

I have some experience sharpening my girlfriend's Caly Jr. in ZDP, and its never really been a problem, even just using the fine (white) ceramic rods on the sharpmaker. It seems to make even more difference to keep it sharp with this one than with softer steels. She cuts a lot of paper, cardboard, foamcore- abrasive stuff --and i have still only had to touch her up half a dozen or so times in as many months to keep the original edge on it.
so don't worry - man, i'd LOVE a Stretch (but need a job first)...

Thanks for the encouragement on the Sharpening:thumbup:

Is the Stretch not a vary popular model ? Sure I have Millies and Para Millies and a Calylll or so. I was thinking this model would fill the middle weight section nicely.

I'm sure many people would like to get one, but $200 is out of budget for a lot of people.

Yeah it is a bit spendy but worth it. The stretch (IMHO) has it all. The feel is well balanced. Weight is light but still enough heft to give it that very sturdy feeling. The carbon fiber peel ply handle has the perfect amount of grip. The ergo's great in the hand. The lock is a very tried and true one..reliable. The lock wont fail unless you are doing something you shouldn't be doing to it. The blade steel is great but there are some who want to put it down. No problems here. Razor sharp from the factory. The final thing is (although not the most important) is the look. It is one sexy knife. Makes my other knives jealous. If you can afford it you will be happy. BTW Spyderco is going to release a FRN version of this next year. Should put the price in a more reasonable range.

As with most things in life, there is no relationship between quality and popularity.

IMHO, the Stretch II is the best folder in the current Spyderco lineup. In terms of pure usability, it's possibly the best production folder ever. It combines quality materials, excellent fit and finish, totally ambidextrous, and superb ergonomics into a compactly efficient package which includes the most effective one hand opening mechanism ever invented, the Spyderhole round hole opener.

As yablanowitz said, ZDP sharpens very well with light pressure on a diamond stone. I find it takes more strokes than VG-10, but you're doing it less often because it stays sharp longer, so it all balances out.

Ok fellas, you sold me ;) I will place an order this afternoon.
I just needed some input, so I don't feel guilty about spending that much on a Spydie. Besides I can show the Missus, that all the good ole boy's have one.:p
Thank you to all for your help.

Bus Driver,

The question I would ask is, anybody here want to part with their Stretch at a discounted price?

The Stretch is the Spyderco I want above all others. It's just too pricy for me at the moment. A few weeks ago a guy sold a NIB one on Bladeforums for 150. I was too late.

Let me know what you think when you get it so I can sulk for a few days.

Just make sure you get one with even flat grinds:eek:I had a heck of a time with mine. I reprofiled it 3 times before having to freehand one side to get it shaving sharp. The flat grinds were of center and it took me about six hours on the diamond rods to rebevel it.And yes having diamonds for this steel is a must if you want to do more then just light sharpening and touch ups. When the edge gets thin a sharp it also becomes a little bit brittle if your not carfull resulting in micro chipping ,like Yabo says light pressure when you get close to the edge.Since I have 4 knives in zdp I can say that it is a pain in the you know what to shapen, but will hold a working edge for a long ass time.:o

Thanks for the heads up..now I'm scared of buggering it up when sharpening

Don't worry too much about it. I've got one of the stretch's and I love it!

I've found w/ all my 'hard' (vg10,zdp,s110v) steel knives that if I keep up w/ them, I'm ok. I touch them up w/ a sharpmaker and they stay sharp. I haven't reprofiled any yet, only the semi hard (s30v) steels.

let us know when it shows up

Well boyzz she came in!!

First of all I must thank you all for your input, esp the {Deacon} :D as I even asked him a few questions via email.
I am totally pleased, with the Stretch, as I am with all my Spyderco knives. Each style of Spydie, has its particular/peculiar design for different uses and function. Each model is very well thought out,and I suspect many many hours of planning and discussion go's into each and every proto, before it even hits the assembly line.
Sure I just received this baby this afternoon, but I have been collecting/acquiring a lot of knives over the years, with lot of $$$ spent finding the perfect one that suits me, for edc. And I will be so bold to say.. I found it!

The Carbon fiber:Grippy but not too grippy.
The blade shape and length:3.5" and a drop point style blade, with a slight choil.
The grip/handle: My hand med fits like it was made for me.
Very thin profile fits discreetly in front pocket.
The weight at 4.4 oz is not a problem, in fact it feels very lite.

Don't get me wrong fellas, I will still use my Para Millies and Millies as well as the others..cause they will get jealous.:p.and I am an equal opportunity sorta of guy.

Peace Out,

Dave
