Any one use a sling? Looking for photos

Hello all,

I've always been interested in the rope sling for hunting/survival usage. Probably comes from learning the story of David and Goliath as a kid. While I don't plan on facing any giants anytime soon the rope sling looks like a viable option to take some smaller game. If nothing else it might be handly at home for chasing squirrels from the bird feeders.

Anyone use one, have any tips or tricks, or outright warning to give it up? Also, anyone have ideas on building one, length, material such along with some photos would be great.

I've made a simple one form some soft leather and paracord that I'm going to try out tomorrow before work. Each strand is approximately 2 feet long giving me an overall length of around 4 feet. From what I've read online that seems about right to start with.

Thanks,

Charlie

I'm moderator/administrator CanDo, there! I highly recommend looking through the much older pages of "General Discussion" of the forums. There is a lot of excellent information buried in there.

You can check out my quick article on slings Here!
I'm also going to recommend this sweet video that Tint (a professional tennis player in Hong Kong, hence the tennis balls) sent to Klippe, the Wilderness Wiki, here: Tint's Slinging Video

When i was a kid i made a sling with a leather thong (teehee :o ), and a piece of old leather jacket. God i was a holy freaking terror with that thing. I could sling stones over the treetops and rqain them down like hail on the old tin roof cabins in the gravel pit behind our house. I maye have bagged a few rabbits and gopher too.... ;)

Then i discovered 1 oz lead balls , that my neighbour poured by the thousands for his blackpowder deer rifle. I could sling those through plywood, glass (oops) and on one occasion thru the aluminum side of a RV racing down the highway.

god i was a little shit back then.

i love slings.... i was making a bunch for a while... i was handing them out to a bunch of bowhunting friends... they're a blast to make too...

I gotta make one of those again, I had one when I was a kid that I loved. Used to be lethal on coke cans :D

I've never attempted getting game with one, that'd be a tricky venture for me right now I think...

That'll be a fun project this weekend I think.

Reading about slinging is like reading about riding a bike.

Make several slings in different lengths.
Experiment with different throwing techniqes, hold/release techniques, stone size and shape.
Leather and paracord is how I'v made most, but I have experimented with lots of stuff. I even braided one from some yucca cordage I made myself.

My biggest piece of advice is to stretch and warm up before you start practicing. It is a lot of fun and before you know it you will be sore, REALLY sore.

CanDo, you ever make big slings, for baseball sized ammo? a bit tricky to get going, more of a two handed sling, but god the damage! :D

Easy to make. Not quite so easy to use. I think you'd have to sling a LOT of bullets to be able to take rabbits consistantly. When I was first playing around with them I could hit man sized targets at back yard distances but with my skill level I wouldn't want to count on feeding myself in the wild with a sling. They're still amazing weapons, after 1000s of years, but take a little getting used to.

So, this thread got me thinking, and when insomnia struck me last night I took out a swatch of denim and my PSK and decided to see if I could make a sling in a survival situation. It only took me about 15-20 minutes to cut out and stitch a double thickness of denim for the pouch and unwind a lanyard for the cords. The hardest part was sewing the doubled-up denim with an inner strand of 550 cord and a fish hook, but it got the job done. Now I just need to get somewhere that I can test it this weekend...

soccergod04, now all you need to do is to make a really good one and put it into your PSK. Then you will never need to make one with a piece of denim, a 550 cord inner strand, and a fish hook.

Do the braided ones work better than the ones with simple string and a flat piece for the pouch?
