Any Opinions on Opinel Knives?

Great knives, they sharpen up to a hair splitting edge.
The only thing to watch for is, at first you start with a #7 and before you
know it, you'll want a #8 #9 and 10 :D

Very sharp, not spendy, great value, have a strange aesthetic appeal that makes you feel like you are in a French vineyard cutting grape vines, and if you get it wet the wood can swell making it hard to open.

They have some of the best from factory blade geometry I've seen in a knife, though they come dull in my experience and need an edge put on them before they see any real use.

They are lightweight, comfortable and the lock ring does its job well. As an EDC I prefer something with a spyder hole and pocket clip, but if you do not mind the lack of these features they make a good carry piece. #7 or 8 would be about the ideal size for me. They offer carbon and stainless and the handles can be modded to your liking.

absolutely love every Opinel I own...and have purchased many for others....great knives if you adjust your expectations.

really like them but never seem to be able to keep them. i prefer the non stainless version but the SS version gets some good reviews. great bang for the buck.

I can't find mine. I loved it. The lock ring got some sort of grit inside that I could not get out.

The blade does not have a detent or anything to keep it closed. Mine would partially open in the pocket.

I am going to have to look into getting a new one.

Great knives, especially since they are only about 12$.

Oh yes, and beware:They are rather addictive:D

IIRC, the current ones have a notch on the lock ring to keep them closed.

Thanks. or should I be annoyed. Now I will really have to get one or two. The price versus the performance is just to great.

Do they have a kids version with a rounded tip? I thought they used to or am I thinking about another brand?

Yes, they have one without a tip, don' t know the name of that specific model right now, but it definitely exists!

Found it. It is called appropriately "My first Opinel"

Colour N°07 Round tipped knife

N°07 Round-tipped safety knife

I might have to pick up a couple of these for my 9yo daughter, 9yo nephew, 11yo niece, and one to give to my 4yo son when he is old enough. Of course I might as well add a couple pointy ones for me.

the stainless versions i believe are 12c27 steel, but i prefer the carbon in those nice knives, it sharpens very easy, it is a soft carbon steel, it holds an edge good enough, it looks better with time, and the opinel knife with a stainless blade, i dont have and perhaps never will.
it has a wood handle, so stainless ?
i know its debatable, but i stick with carbon blades in my opinel knives.
it is a good folder, strong enough, cuts like a razor, sharpens fast, and its cheap enough
give it a try :D you wont be dissapointed
