Any opinions on the SOG Aegis?

Nutnfancy on youtube gave it a pretty good review.

I am looking for a plain edge tactical folder. I am right now considering a SOG Aegis with a black finish or a Spyderco Endura. I would like the Endura but it doesn't have the plain edge with the black finish.

Any thoughts on the Aegis? Or SOG steel in general?

Thanks!

I came here to recommend the nutnfancy video but I see you've already seen that.

I don't have any experience with SOG, they don't make many knives that appeal to me, and I don't like the way they shamelessly plaster their name allover all of their knives.

Have you considered any of the CLB Bokers? Trance, Hyper, M-Type, Direkt. All excellent knives for the money.

I checked out the bokers. They look pretty sweet.

Only thing I am not crazy about is the liner lock. I prefer an axis type or a spyderco lock back type. I am pretty sure because I cut myself really badly with a CRKT Kasper back in the day. Yep, it had a liner lock.

I am just concerned about the steel to the SOG Aegis.

I should just bite the bullet and get a Spyderco or even an Emerson. Why can't they make an Emerson with a lock back design?

i dont think the aegis has steel liners, but it would be lighter.

the spyderco endura is very strong, reliable knife for sure.

Sog is very overpriced for the steels they use (for the most part). I have found the quality of their folders to not be so great. Lots of blade play in any of the flash or twitch series that I used to sell, and again, too much money for the steel. (AUS8 should never be at $90 for MSRP). It's a decent steel, but there are much better out there for the price.

Lets see AUS8A is not a bad steel. I uses an arch lock which is in my opinion smoother than an axis lock. It should be as strong if not stronger than an axis lock. It's also an assisted opener price is about 75 bucks (few dollars more or less, the real price not lamely quoting MSRP fantasy)

I only own one SOG (Tomcat III) I must concede that the ARCH lock is no joke and it's probably raises the price of the item. My impression of SOG is they make great quality products and I don't hear complaints of failure about them.

So no it's not overpriced at all.

I do like steel liners though I would check to see if it has steel liners. I can't imagine an arch lock without them but you never know

It does not have liners. That's one reason that nutnfancy gave it such a high rating. (he's a weight freak)
I have heard alot of complaints about blade play though....

SOG used to be good, but most their knives are overpriced. I"ve picked up super sharp AUS-8 Berettas for $28. I don't know what SOG is thinking. I guess American-made can't compete price-wise with Byrds and the like.

I wouldn't toss SOG out the window so soon. They do make some great knives, some "better" than others, but we all have out favorite types.

Don't confuse the arc-actuator lock with the Arc lock. They are two completely seperate things. I believe all of the SAT knives also use the Arc-actuator lock. It is basically the release on the side which pulls the hidden lockbar back. The Arc lock is the one that is ambidextrous and has been tested at 1000 lbs. Rumors from SOG over a phone call about two years ago said that the arc-actuator lock does about 30-40 lbs before slipping out. Not bad at all for a mechanism resembling a lockback design (taken apart view).

The Aegis looks to be an excellent knife and I would get one myself if I had spare money laying around to get one. Preferably with the digi-camo and black plain edge blade :D

The SAT knives are going to have a little bit of play, it seems to be a bit of the design. You either have too much tension for the spring to work, or you have just the right amount and the blade will move just a tad on the side-to-side.

I have found that SOG's AUS8 is as good as it gets. My SOG Trident TF-1, had an excellent blade geometry and would also be hair popping sharp and keep it's edge for a long time.

If you like the way the aegis looks, I say go for it.

You know what, I think I may have found a middle ground for you. You wanted a plain edge black coated blade, yet you also like SOG's looks and questioned their steel quality....so I found you the best of both worlds:

SOGVS02.jpg

The SOG Visionary II, it's the size of a spyderco endura with the strength of the arc-lock. These run just a little more than your typical endura 4 and have VG-10 blade steel as well

This is one of SOG's real winner's on design and materials. Good bang for the buck :)

Hope this helps, J.

I like the access card 2.0. A flat concealable skeletonized steel framed arch lock folder with 2.75 inch VG10 blade Made in Seki city. I looks quite handy for small cutting chore like cutting boxes.

I am definitely take a closer look at the access card. I like the wharncliffe blade better (practical satin)

I really like the looks of that. Have you handled one before?

I've handled the two seperate knives that this was designed from, the X-Ray vision and the Spec Elite I. The handle feels great and the blade has a very useful shape.

I hope that helps, J.

Let me just chime in and say that I love the Arc-Lock on my Pentagon Elite II... I personally feel it locks up better than my AXIS BM610. Since the Visionary II is practically the PE II with a different blade geometry and a smaller size (same steel, grip, and lock), I'd recommend the Visionary II... although, you have to at least take a look at the PE II - it's a beauty and a beast wrapped up in one package... and that was my bad joke for the day... :D

I like the SOG lineup, but you generally have to get over the fact that some of their models have a very slight bit of blade wiggle, and can have a cheapy feel. But these things shouldn't slow you down. They have much going for them, including decent steel, light weight, nice assisted openers and deep clips.

Mini Aegis.

Aegis and Flash II.

Consider also their peewee lineup:
