any Paintballers here?

Dp's have quality control issues. I used to be a hardcore Automag RT and Dye Autococker nut back in the 90's. Not to rehash through the whole history with Smart Parts, I.e. GOG. But when I got back into paintball and stopped caring about what marker I shot with, and went with an Ion, I realized, they really do make user friendly easier to work on products. The stock regulators are consistent and the markers are efficient on air.

With that said don't be afraid of ebay packages for a GOG/SP (they're easy to fix) marker, HP tank and thermal goggles. I personally prefer JT thermals over other goggle brands but that will depend on the shape of your face.

Quick tip, if you really feel you need an aftermarket board, you can buy/find non-working Virtue board on ebay or wherever for cheap, anyhow, Virtue has a lifetime warranty so you can buy a broken board for $20 on ebay (it's what I did) and send it back to Virtue for another $15 and they will fix and/or send you back a new board. You end up spending $40 for a $150 board!

wow alot more advice than i expected to get :D definately some helpfull tips, and i just came across the Proto Rail PMR... any experience with it? the review i saw on it made it look like the best sub $300 marker out there. as for gear, i know that for sure, my overall price just got bumped a bit, but my gun price is still gonna be sub $300.

my shopping list so far, let me know what you think, with the pro's and cons of these items.

PMR Rail is one of the better choices in your price range, I would get a GOG product over it. PRM comes with an aftermarket reg as stock and some people argue incredible ergonomics with its grip setup. The GOG woodsball version SP1 or whatever its called is going to be water resistant, more efficient on air due to dwell settings out of the box. But they're both spool valves so it's pretty much the same marker. If you get a 4500 tank the air efficiency is not going to matter so much though. You generally aren't carrying 800 paintballs on your person. And Halos are great, but it's overkill. You are better off spending some of that money on knee pads. It's not speedball and you don't need to lay down a solid stream of paint, chances are you will be playing against a lot of rental players and it's pretty unfair in a lot of ways to the rental players. Same with speed feed it's overkill and junk gets in your hopper in the woods. If it rains its not usable either, whereas the GOG products are. The Enmey (spelling?) is old school pneumatic no batteries and its much better for foul weather. Kingman fasta at 50 bucks feeds 15bps, in manual no one is shooting 15BPS realistically. So a halo at 20+ is even more overkill. You gotta remember admission and paint gets pricey so I wouldn't focus on a high end hopper. Barrels are cheap to find on ebay btw. You only really need two I keep the stock barrels on my Razors which are pretty darn good and the autococker came with a 3 bore Kaner kit which is sweet. Usually the .690 is the do it all though with regular field paint.

I end up playing with my autococker a lot just because it can be overkill playing with a hopped up electro against rental players. Don't forget a pod belt or harness. Tom Kaye of Airgun design pretty much has disproved almost every theory of paintball physics that is out there. Longer barrels, one gun being more accurate than another etc..etc... Ultimately if you have a gun whose reg is consistent + - 10 fps let's just say, your sweet spot for solid hits is really about 60 feet, maybe 80 feet max. Someone with a Tiberius or longbow barrel can maybe hit me at 120 feet, yes, but that paintball is not going to break as its lost enough energy to prevent it from breaking when it hits a person. People used to always hype up apex barrels on their A5's about how great it is, meanwhile they are lugging around this stupid long and awkward 15 pound gun with a ridiculous barrel length on it and their gear etc...etc... trying to compete against kids with a 6 pound and compact tourney setup gun. You tell me after two hours which equipment makes more sense running around the woods. Note Tom Kaye proved any barrel longer than 12" is pretty much useless.

PS if you are looking for a solid marker look into the differences between spool valves and poppet valves like the Planet Eclipse Ego and Etha. The PMR and GOG products as spool valves are basically the same gun. You'd be able to find a PE combo with an ETEK, Etha or older but equally gorgeous 06-08 EGO for about 300 ish or less if you get lucky. These are really bullet proof markers. A $1,000 new in 07 eclipse will still shoot solid even though it sells for $250 in 2013 vs buying something that is $250 new off the back.

My Ions which I bought as a discontinued model came completely hopped up with the works, magnetic trigger, alum frame, QEV, etc for $199. But it had like $500 in parts in it. So its something to think about. I see that you keep looking at new markers but also consider older super high end models. If you are looking at the PMR new why not check out the DM series used, the DM is the pro version. They can be a bargain. Out of all those choices I would personally get a GOG and be done with it or a used ETEK if it were me searching for something new. I also wouldn't hesitate to go old school and non electro. Like a prostock Autococker for $150. I have a lot of fun using my cheapie Trilogy Pro against electro guys just for the fun of it.

haha i'm not too worried about knee pads, i guarantee with the training i do in the army i can handle it. what are some good Hoppers that will be cheaper, and won't have too many problems? and can i still put the same speed feeder on them? and to begin with i'll probably stick with the stock barrel on whatever i get untill i know the pro's and con's to that specific marker/barrel combo

From my experience I'd suggest a Planet Eclipse Etek 4 if staying under $300. If you decide you want something in the $500 range I have a Planet Eclipse Combat Ego 10($1200 msrp 2010)(great color scheme for scenario) for sale in perfect working condition. I also have a black Dye rotor, Ninja Air 68/4500 with Sly cover, Dye i4 dyecam mask with yellow lens, amber sunrise lense, Dye C13 pants, Planet Eclipse jersey, Smart Parts full Freak kit, Deadly Winds whisper carbon fiber barrel that utilizes the Freak kit, Dye attack pack pro, 4 dye lock lid pods, 2 parts kits for the Ego 10, barrel cover, all for sale. The pants, mask, jersey, attack pack, and pods were all used 1 time to play then I decided I had out grown the sport. If you are interested in any of these items contact me.

This is all upper echelon gear by the way, about $1300 worth.

Secondhand Tippman 98 (non-custom) with the gas cranked up and a 14-inch rifled barrel, accurate past 50 yards. Only used it a few times, but it never failed me.
The barrel is another brand, cannot remember it for the life of me, but I run it with an adapter.

I used to roll with a very early model Spyder Xtra had modded Dye stickies, Supa-fly bolt and smart-parts barrel. Very flash and dash looking, got me shot lots. (everyone teams the guy with his own gear) when I was playing somewhat often, only tippmans were black, everything else was as bright and "this is not a gun" looking it was closer to lazer-tag! Fun times though. Played recently and all the proshop guns had rails, stocks and were black. Of course so much changes in sports so quick, when I started no one thought a bullet shaped paintball was possible, but now we have them. Very cool stuff.

Lots of the paintball companies were/are relatively small, its not that big a sport total dollar-wise, so lots of the companies have changed hands a time or two. And at the end of the day, there are only so many ways to get what you want done. Every time I look into it, there are big changes, I guess you'd have to be in it pretty solid to keep up!
