Any plans to use the ball bearing lock again?

Your Dodo FB prototype (Darth Vader!) is a beauty!

Actually, Nemo, the "Darth Vader" as it's being called was made before the Dodo hit the streets. I came up with that based on my best memory of the concept of the Ronin. If you look at the two knives side by side you can see that my memory is really bad! The DV came out great but it's a completely different knife, which is fine. With my knifemaking setup (files) the Dodo's grind would be next to impossible to achieve, unfortunately. :(

Oops Sorry.
Your DV got a kind of parrot head like on the DOdo... that's why !

We also have several new models planned for ball bearing locks and new improvements on the lock in general.

We're also developing a few new models to intro the next two new locks.

YOU
ROCK!!!!!!!!

I've been waiting to hear this for almost a year now!! THANK you, Sal!

You just guaranteed yourself the sale of at least three or four new knives, I think. :)

My Dodo has been my EDC for over a year now.

The BB lock has been flawless.

I can easily open and close it with one hand and no other movement (like flicking my wrist) nor assistance (like pushing the blade against my leg) is necessary -- although those methods work, too.

Got to echo what you say there. I've a serated and plain Dodo, both are rock solid. Whilst I love my Sebenza, would like to EDC a fixed blade, its the Dodo I return to time and time again

4 new locks in 6 years is a lot of innovation for a small company. How many new locks have come out in the past 50 years?
What are the four locks?

looking at the mechanics behind the ball lock, i ask myself wether it is possible that the blade unlocks should the spring break or become weak due to springfatigue? As the spring is compressed in closed position, doesn't this lead to weak springs after a long time? And what about dirt seeping into the springchannel? I am not criticising the lock at all, just some engineering questions that well up in my mind. :)

Hi Loki.

Product development at Spyderco is a constant ongoing process. Each model is constantly being assessed for improvement and future potential.

The Ball bearing lock does have a few questions that we're working on. While function has been very good, once initial "bugs" were worked out, we're still working on easier access for unlocking the ball and we're watching the springs for the questions posed.

There is no source for information on what is in the future. When it comes to innovation, time and use are the only real source of info. That's what refinement and evolution are all about in product development. It's also whee the passion is for Spyderco.

Hi Jaids, the Compression lock and the ball bearing lock are already in the marketplace and have both received US patents. The other 2 new locks are still in initial develoment and patent work so I can't say too much. You should see both on "AFI" versions of some of the new models by next year.

Let me say that I don't own a Dodo, just played with my brothers.
The one thing I would like to see on the Ball bearing lock is something on the ball to assit in gripping it for closing. Maybe make it like a golf ball, or checker it, or something. Just an idea. For now I'll stick with my liner locks, lock backs and compression lock. :)

Thanks Sal.

I dont get the problem with the access to the ball lock. For me it seems easy to unlock with the thumb and forefinger pulling back the ball. The blade falls into the closed position. No problem.

I don't have a problem either -- though I use thumbpad and thumbside corner of middle fingernail to pull the ball back, with index finger pushing blade closed (before gravity does the same thing). No problem. :)

Some seem to have a problem unlocking the ball. It is our responsibility to look at improvement.

Hi Sal,
I just wanted to let you know that I, for one am really very impressed that you take the time to come here and answer questions about your products. Makes me feel VERY confident about your knives when you are able to come here and listen to the concerns and opinions of the people you have sold them to. I am in line to receive three of the rescue spydercos in a passaround, and I am sure they will not disappoint.
Thanks for making yourself available to your customers,
Rad

I never thought I would quote myself, :) , but I have only played with the Dodo. Not for long, just played with it. I probably could get the hang of it, but I like to be able to open and close a Spyderco knife somewhat quick the first time I pick it up. It just didn't "close" like I want my Spyderco's to close. It opened smooth, and I really like the grip of the Dodo, but I just need a smoother "close". I might be the only one, don't hate me. :)

I don't hate you. In fact, if I lived closer to you, I would come over and show you how easy it is for me (there may be physiological differences preventing you from the same moves) in exchange for BBQ. :)

Thanks Donutsrule!! We do have some excellent BBQ. :)

Devilnut, thank you.

Blades, texture on the ball will not stay on the sides. The ball must be smooth to roll properly. If that texture gets on the tang or the roof, the smooth rolling will be impaired.

Access must provide enough purchase to unlock with the tip of one finger. That is the goal.

Good comments "Think of the Children". Did you ever think about changing your avatar.

Mr. Glesser,
Oh well, so much for my golf ball idea. :) Sometimes I like to think of a quick solution, without all the facts. A "Macgyver" fix, I guess you could call it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
