Dont take this the wrong way but there wouldnt be any rust after washing and drying and WD40 .Not everyone takes that good care of there tools or cant take care of them this quickly because of the enviroment they find themselves in .

I clean mine every Friday at the end of a work week. No rust yet and im doing irragation, plumbing, electrical, HVAC. No rust yet. But I was working with a lot Muratic Acid last week and must have gotten some on the Surge. Then put the Surge in my pouch. When I went to do my weekly cleaning I found these small burn like marks. Which I like to call character markings.
