Any reason this motor won't work?

I recently built my grinder and used step pulleys to avoid having to purchase a VFD, the motor i got was free and is powerful enough now that i set it up right. I spent about 60 bucks building the stupid pulley system. Monday I will start looking for a 3ph motor and vfd from the local used electrical place near me.

You just recently purchased this grinder set up and werent too happy correct? can you send back the pulley set up? If i was you i would look for a used 3ph motor and a new or used VFD. It wont be as much as that motor you listed, 3phase motors are a dime a dozen on craigslist.

Having said that i would still buy a used motor i you want 1ph but yes the one you linked is good IMO

Yep, that one will work for sure, but as Paul says, 3 ph is the way to go. I think a 3ph motor is around $160 or so for 1800 RPM. Take a look at this one for a 2hp, 1 ph, 1800 RPM for $189 shipped. http://tinyurl.com/lwvfxob

I've used their 3ph motors with success, but not 1 ph - I expect they're just fine.

am I wrong that you probably can't run a 2 HP motor on a 120V 20A circuit? Everything I've read says you have to run a 1.5 HP motor or smaller.

I didn't click on 2hp on 120vac either. If you've got and GOOD wiring, then most likely the 2hp will work on 120vac with a 20amp breaker, better 30 amp breaker. I've ran 2hp on 120vac, but I was pulling direct from breaker with #12 wire and short run - I'm pretty sure I was on 20amp breaker, don't remember for sure. This is for starting a very low load, not high load. I would for sure suggest 1.5hp motor for 120vac. The link I gave has all sizes of motors, so the size can be chosen.

I can run either 120 or 230 volts. If I get a 3 phase motor do I have to have a vfd?

I am not understanding something. For a 3 phase motor. Even with 230 v I only have 2 hot wires a neutral and a ground. The 3 phase motors use 3 hot wires. I have 2 hot wires. How does this work? I have googled till my brain is about to melt and cannot figure out how to wire in a 3 phase motor.

I'm assuming that is what the vfd does. So I guess I will stick to the single phase motor.
