I haven't read much, if anything, ever posted about Livesay knives. I am considering placing an order but, wanted to check for feedback about good or bad customer service and whether products are delivered on timely basis.

Thanks!

Sid,I had great cust service from Mr.Livesay and love his knives although at the moment I aint got one due to recent trades.I talked directly to da man himself when ordering and really enjoyed the conversation.Right now Newt is in the process of a big move with his company to a different location so you might want to give him a calll on delivery time .No matter though his blades are top notch and in my opinion the #1 priced customs on the market.Where else can you get a handmade carbon steel sheath knife for around $150 or less?

Hey Sid, use a credit card, not a debit card; you'll be glad you did.

Newt has a bit of Jekyl and Hyde going on. Some love him, some hate him. Newt bends over backwards for some, blows off others.

I guess only time will tell how your actual experience will be. My experience is akin to "the bad". I didn't take it personally, but Newt did.

This is a warning to those considering doing business with Newt Livesay of Wicked Knife Co.

I’d like to preface my remarks by saying that I had one other negative experience with Newt. I also had two positive experiences.

I emailed around Newt around August 5, 2002 to see if he had a Wasp in stock. He replied that he did not, but he did have a Wasp II (prototype with larger belly) in stock. That sounded better than a Wasp! I tried calling in my order but discovered that the phone line was not in use. I emailed Newt about the phone and he asked for my number. I provided my home and work phone numbers but I never received a call (or at least a message). I faxed in my order and my card was promptly charged. After waiting about two weeks, I emailed Newt. He said he had been told that the knife would be at my location early the following week. It never arrived. I emailed Newt and he replied that the knife was accidentally packed away somewhere, probably under a trailer. He would find it and get it out to me ASAP. After waiting about ten days, I emailed Newt and stated that I would wait until the following Friday. If he couldn’t ship the knife by then, I’d have to cancel my order. I emailed him after a few days, expressing my disappointment and reminding him that I would wait no longer than Friday. He replied that he would cancel and refund my order. He didn’t provide an explanation or an apology. I waited about ten days but my card was not credited with the refund. I replied to his email, providing him with a recap of the situation, his repeated false promises, and the final blow, not returning my money. He replied that he would refund my money as soon as he could (but from what I could gather on his forums, he is broke). He then offered an alternative, stating that he had a Wasp (standard, not Wasp II) sitting on his desk and he would send me that tomorrow as well as the tracking number. I replied that I would be happy to buy that knife. He replied that same night saying that the knife would go out in the morning. I emailed him in the morning and asked for the tracking number. He replied that he is shipping by USPS and does not have a tracking number. The story isn’t over yet. No, of course the knife never arrived. I never expected it would but I was reluctant to believe that a man could lie so many times to a customer. I emailed Newt to inform him that the package never arrived, that I was going to dispute the charge with my credit card company, and post on bladeforums. He didn't reply.

Newt's in between shop setups right now as the result of a move & he's working hard to get his legs back under him. His area code was changed recently & that has also caused him some problems. I've dealt w/ him for years & know him to be a man of his word. I'm certain he's trying to hold up his end. I hope everybody's orders get cleared up ASAP.

I'd just like to add that I have dealt with Newt on the phone while ordering several knives, and met him in person while at the Oregon Show a year or two ago. He stood and talked to my son and I, explaining how he makes knives - doing this and that - and he was very engaging and polite. A bit salty? Perhaps, but nonetheless a good guy.

BTW...I rcv'd everything I ever ordered from him quite promptly and with no problems. Just my experience.

i too have had nothing but good luck w/livesay, but all this makes ya wonder.....

is he having financial probs(ie on the post above said he was broke on his website?!?!!?)??

I sent an email to ask the status of the ESSEL knife on his web site. He responded back saying that he had to push it back due to financial reasons. He lost his a$$ in the WorldCom fiasco and it just about bankrupted him. There was more that he sent, but I cannot find the email. Give him time, he will be back, he is just getting caught up right now.

My wife and I have talked with Newt, and purchased some of his knives and other products. Excellent customer service, and great tools as well, IMHO. I'm getting ready to buy one of the new 3/16" thick Woo's with micarta scales as soon as Newt can begin production.

Best regards,
Clayton

My experience with Newt was bad!

Met him at a custom show in NYC a few years ago, when another gentleman had a table and was selling Newt's wares. Spoke with Newt for a while. He's knowledgeable, and we had a pleasant conversation. Bought a drg with a cord wrapped handle. We spoke about a titanium drg with a thumb notch. He said he'd make one for me with a thumb notch for the bargain price of $45 shipped, and have it in about two weeks. Gave Newt $45 in cash. E-mailed him 3 weeks later since I didn't have the knife. He e-mailed back that he'd get it to me. E-mailed him a few weeks later, since no knife came. Got a similar reply. This went on about 3 more times. No knife. E-mailed him a few months after that, and never got a reply.

As far as I'm concerned, he took my $45 and gave me nothing. There's a term for people who do that. In the end, I saved money, since I'll never buy any of Newt's products, either new, or on the secondary market.

I am glad that good folks here have had positive experiences with Newt. I do not wish him bad luck, and hope he extricates himself from his financial difficulties. Caveat emptor with respect to Newt.
