Any recommendations for my first Boker?

Hi everyone:

I am kinda new to the knife-nut scene and was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for a first Boker?

I have a few Spydercos but have been wanting to branch out. I am seeing that other knife makers and companies have really great design and philosophies to bring to the table. My favorite Spyderco by far and away is the Lava, which has brought me over to look into Boker knives.

I really like some of the mods that you guys have been getting on your knives and was wondering, once I get a Boker, how can I go about getting some wooden scales on it? Thanks in advance all!

PS. One more question if I may, I know that Spydercos (and other knives as well, but I am most familiar with Spydies) have the ability to be opened by grasping the blade and flicking the handle downward, or if the pivots are loose, by simply flicking the blade out of the handle. Can you do this with Bokers as well?

Hi Kunsthaus;

CLB's:

Comparing your lava to the subcom littlebigknives CLB's
the most simular bladeshape is the classic Subcom.

There are also wharncliff style Wharcom Hawkbill style Subclaws and somewhat larger fixed blade compact called the SubcomFixed.

The Edit that will be coming out soon will look like the SubcomFixed with a slightly shorter handle and blade. It will have a modified tanto tip and Titanium coating and tilted handle like on the delica sized Trance. The recoil area is also slightly changed compared to SubcomFixed.

The Trance and Hyper are Delica sized.

The Trance has a flipper and framelock . The flipper is fun for very quick deployment. they come in modified tanto tip and droppoint tipped Trance drop.

The hyper has double tumbstuds and titanium coating and slight recurve blade.(also framelock) It opens very smooth and can be flicked open quickly with wristmovement after releasing the first little bit by tumbstead for the ballbearing retent to be released.

The Direct soon to be released has a somewhat more tactical look and is 9cm longbladed. droppoint tip . It also has a flipper which act as a handguard and functions as a quickdeployment like on the Trance.

All the sumcoms will not flick open easily imho. The fingercoil and thumbstudposition in combination to the small blade make it hard to spyderdrop or flick open.
Using the thumstud normal opening they however open swift enough imo.

I don't now if you live in the USA but overthere i would recommand potterma who also is member on this forum.
Just shoot him a pm.

His work can be seen here;

I have no decent workplace at my home . Thats why i stallin hometinkering myself at the moment. I'm looking for someone to rehandle some CLB's here in Europe myself. If anyone nows a custommaker here in europe at reasonable prices feel free to pm me.

On higher end Bokers ;

Turbine or Turbine 2 has very positive reviews in germany.
I will get me one in near future.

Fixed hunter Savannah in new 2008 catalogue has my attention too.

Rampage RJMartin/Boker collab which is already out here in Europe has my attention too. Tactical fixed blade.

You will find a lot of threads concerning CLB's and other Models. Just browze arround and if not sure just ask arround.

Welcome overhere and have fun!!!

Some pictures to compare;).

I'd suggest a subcom. I have 3 of them. They are dependable, simple and brilliantly designed.
I also have a spyderco Endura, with wave. It looks just like the Delcia in the picture above, but larger.

These are very nice.I have them both.Highly reccomend them.Titanium handles on both.One with S60V blade & the other is ceramic.Around $100-$150,depending on where you buy them.:)

You can do this with the SubClaw and the Trance...not easily, but it can be done. (I've tried it.)

Lol, I can wave the Trance and SubCom (most difficult) as well, but you gotta pay much more attention at the moment the thumbstud or the half disc reachs the edge of your pocket, and press it away from you, while pointing the end of the handle towards you... hard to explain. The Trance waves 8 of the 10 times, the Subcom 3 of the 10 times ... gotta practice more :p

Why don´t you try a Leo Damast? Just kidding, take a SubCom, you won´t be dispointed.

Joske, you lucky lucky bastard, you just couldn't resist to show off ;) Wait 'till I get my Magnum 2008, CLB Direkt and KeyCom:D:D:D
When are you getting Eurofighter II? (Damast of course)

the AK 101 is a fairly recent knife to Boker's line up but it seems very well built. I have RBB and while it can certainly be considered "mall ninja" it is pretty well constructed. Subcoms and all variants are good as well. Is there any price range you're looking for or style?

That is a great design:thumbup:,but they are pretty pricey:(

Only got one kidney left, otherwise I'd sell it for knives (including the one which cuts me)... J/K:jerkit::jerkit::jerkit:
Böker Magnum has some damast folders as well, but as the prices suggest, not the same quality as Böker made in Solingen.

JTR, I particularly like your S60V with its recurve, it looks very simular to the AK 101. Imagine the damage when you slash with those:D:D:D

Thanks.It's(S60V)one of my favorite smaller knives.The ceramic one is a "case queen",although I'd really like to do some cutting with it.I hear that ceramic is pretty hard(not tough)stuff.If I ever managed to dull it,I'd have to send it in to get sharpened though.
I'm pretty sure the Magnum series damascus is acid etched & NOT real damascus.

Couldn't resist!:D;)

I don't think I'll be getting the Eurofighter II, for the moment I spend my money for some custom knives, I wil go to the MesserMacherMesse in Solingen, and I bought some Chris Reeve Knives. I still like Boker - they turn out some great knives!:thumbup:

Some other nice Bokers I like (in no particular order):

Boker "classic" folder with different handle materials
Boker Folding Hunter
And these two: damascus blades, nice handles, and they are less expensive than the Eurofighter damast (not my knives - not my pics)

Some of the new Magnum models for this year are Damascus, which is a nice. i saw these in Vegas and they are nice. The line is limited for models, and it is not your $500 range Damascus, but they will be great value for the money once they get out there. ;)I got mine ordered!

Apparently they plan to do some S30V runs for this pattern in 2008 (see downloadable catalog on Boker.de)

Kunst,

How far do you want to branch out? Before the coming of the House of Los Banos overshadowed everything else, Boker was known for their excellent Tree Brand traditional slipjoint pocket knives (and still are) - yet another world to explore.

Good point Wintermute. Maybe a good 'ole Sodbuster. I just ordered one for old-time-sake.
