I am i desperate need (well not really i just want one) of a decent practical utility folder i have had a good look at the forums and have concluded that the CRKT M-16 13Z is a quite decent knife for the money i am NOT looking for a really good knife just one similar to the price range and quality of the CRKT. If anyone can help that would be great also if anyone knows of a good online store located in Australia that would be AWESOME

It's a decent knife.

Not really a "utility folder", though, in my view.
And who knows what steel CRKT is using in the blade these days.

See if you can locate a Spyderco Endura or a Benchmade Griptilian
instead.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

My favorite utility folder that is still available is a Spyderco Native III. With a little searching you can find it on the web for about $45.

The Benchmade Griptilian goes for somewhere in the $65 range. It's a sweet thing, too.

How much did you want to spend? And how big a blade did you want? What kind of jobs are you expecting your "utility folder" to perform?

I did a quick web search on the M16-13Z and found conflicting reports on the steel. Some sites say it is AUS6. Another said AUS4. Another said it is AUS8. Holy confusion, Bat man! I think most folks on the forums believe AUS8 has acceptable qualities for a folder. I don't think the same can be said for AUS6 or AUS4. If it were me, before I ordered one of these I would contact the seller and make sure he told me the blade steel of the M16 he is selling. If it were not AUS8, I'd look for another blade.

I highly recommend the Spyderco brand; in the price range of the Columbia River---which, by the way, the LAWKs is a reliable system but the knives themselves are years behind Mr. Glesser's Spyderco brand in fit, finish, quality of materials, and function---there is the Salt series, which replaces carbon in the steel formula with nitrogen to give surprisingly great edge retention with no rush, and the always-great Delica- and Endura-4s. All of those can be had at $50 (+/-$5) from good sources on the internet. Try www.knifecenter.com, www.newgraham.com (my personal favorite), or www.gpknives.com ; if you need a really, REALLY big knife, I highly recommend the Cold Steel X2 Voyager ($50.50 from GP Knives)

The Spyderco Delica and Byrd Cara Cara are both very great for the money spent. Haven't tried one (YET!), but look into Boker's new Trance folder. It has an integral liner-lock, a 'flipper' (not unlike on your M16-13Z), and can be worn either with the tip of the closed knife pointing down or up.

I know people who love the M16's, or hate the M16's because of cheap steel and lock problems. I personally would not spend my money on this knife. There are better quality knives for approximately the same price out there. Ultimately you must decide, but others in this thread have offered better alternatives. Good Luck!

Can't go wrong with a Spyderco Endura4. I even carry mine over 100$ folders sometimes. Great knife for the money!

I have to agree with digdeep. The M-16 is very much a love-hate thing. I was on the hate side, so you know where my biases lie, so be careful 'cause you might fall that way too. ;)

For ~$40 you can get a lot more knife for that money. I recommend (starred is personal experience):

Spyderco Native
Spyderco Endura**
Spyderco Delica**
Kershaw Mini-Cyclone / Cyclone** - built like a TANK
Kershaw Leek - nice little knife
Byrds - everyone says they're awesome for the price
Opinel - if you don't mind a non-locking folder
Buck 110 - if you like the classics
Browning Ice Storm - VG10 steel, made by MCUSTA!

You could also always consider a SAK.
