Any Rednecks?

What was the original question that started this thread? Oh yeah, I carry a Spyderco Native in my back pocket. I am actually trying to find something for each pocket. Still looking.

What I find Puzzling and Deeply disturbing is the Need to identify One's race at all. Certainly in this medium, it is irrelevant. The quality of one's words is the Only means of expression that matters.

I am grateful for cut fingers comments, because it illustrates the main questions this thread poses to me: are these Words inherently Bad? I don't think so, they are just words. It is the Intent behind the Use of the word that can be very Very wrong and deeply offensive.

A bunch of guys calling themselves 'rednecks' and being proud of what that means to Them, is Not wrong. And It has little or nothing to do with You, Jedi.

Really, what do you mean by these comments to my brother Cutfinger?:

"I can only hope you don't witness any of this hatefulness aimed at your race, seeing how insulting racial remarks are approved of here."

I was completely Unaware that Insulting Racial Remarks are approved of by this site, or condoned, or even Allowed. Nobody here in this thread except perhaps for yourself, my friend, has made racially biased remarks. I have seen No hatefulness at all, save some comments from yourself.

According to your argument, then, you would find it acceptable to use terms like "nigger" and "wetback", provided, of course, that you, in your unique ability to look into the hearts of internet users and judge their motives, have determined the proper "intent" of the people who use them.
An utter crock of BS.

JK

Jedi, you are still Not seeing my point. I would NEVER use any of those words directed AT anyone, whether I knew the color of their skin or not. That is Not acceptable, polite, or rational.

On the other hand, your use of those two words in your last post is acceptable. You did not use them to express hate, but only to illustrate your point. If I am to accept your arguement, someone Might be offended by Your usage of those words, regardless of their context or intent.

There is a difference, however, in calling YOURSELF a name. But I guess I AM too much of Slow Witted Clumsy Dumb S**t to be able explain it properly to such an intelligent and empathetic person as yourself. Get it now?

If you are so bothered by this thread, why did You bring it back to the top?

BTW: I have friends of All colors. It is very important to remember that People are People are People. I am offended by even the idea that 'race' is meaningful to some folks. The use of the term redneck in this thread clearly transcends all the usual notions of ethnicity.

The use of the
term redneck in this thread clearly transcends all the usual notions of ethnicity.

The term "redneck", has always applied , and in this thread as well, to white people, exclusively. Likewise, the "person" who typed the term "cracker", obviously as a racial slur aimed at white people. These are racial slurs, and they are offensive. They are no better than calling a black person the "n-word" I mentioned earlier, or calling a Mexican the "w-word".
Black people can and do call one another the "n-word", but it still remains a racial slur. It's a shame the owners of this business approve of using racial slurs, no one should be subject to such demeaning language from a public place of business.

If you are so bothered by this thread, why did You bring it back to the top?

I responded to your brother's post. I guess it came back to the top as a result of that.

I'm no expert at anthology, but, I haven't seen anyone indicate where the term "redneck" originated. Now I don't know if it started in Kansas, but, I do know that a hellava lot of farmers got a red neck (burnt by the sun) by planting, seeding, harvesting, roping, branding, etc.. I grew up on a quasi farm/ranch and had multitudes of animals, pick up trucks, guns, knives, bib overalls and a "red neck". My brother tried to beat the system by letting his hair grow down to his shoulders. yeh, he beat the "redneck" label and picked up another one. So my definition of redneck is probably no different than any other guy that came from fairly humble roots and still maintains a lot of them in his own family today.
Besides, I love Jeff Foxworthy (I hope he marries my sister, so he can teach me to read!)

I would like to make it clear that I have never seen any explicitly racially derogatory remarks aimed at African Americans in Bladeforums. The reason why I identified my race when I posted was so that I could make it clear what my perspective was. I have posted numerous times and I usually don't mention my race because it usually has nothing to do with the topic being discussed.
Furthermore, by identifying myself as black I did no more than those who identified themselves as "rednecks". Afterall, it is understood that all who fit that description are white. Finally, I sought to point out in my original post that the love of the outdoors and nice knives is a part of Southern culture in general. In other words, I can appreciate the love that all knive lovers have for their blades or else I would not be member of this forum.

I give up Jedi. I tried. I really did.

Thanks for both of your posts Cut Finger. Your perspective is very helpful and instructive.

Everyone, when I used the word Brother, I was not identifying my ethnicity (which most would call white as I am Scandanavian and Swiss by ancestry). I think All human beings are my Brothers and Sisters. I did not mean to offend anyone Or identify My skin color.

A point of interest, I am Not a redneck. However, one of my real brothers (I have three) is proud to call himself a redneck. And he is not at all racist. I hope that helps make it clear that the word is not based on genetics alone.

As my previous post tried to point out this term, which has generated some controversy, can be based on a philosophy of life, rather then race or where one lives.

Frankly I don't understand what all the fuss is about, except this is what happens when people start splitting hairs, or try to be Politically Correct.

This post is only to try to bring peace and perspective.

Y'all may be a Redneck if the plastic flamingo in yer front yard has buckshot holes in it.

let's get this post back to the topic. i'm pretty sure of my redneck status, what do you guys think. my mom was raised in texas and alabama, her parents still have a southern drawl, and i was raised calling heavy rain storms "gullywashers". we grew a bunch of our own food in a garden in our front yard, my dad was a gunsmith for a time, i was shooting by the age of 5, i see duct tape as a temporary solution to nearly everything (including rowdy kids) and i know people who don't have running water. all that has to count for something.

for knives, i carry a BF native on my left IWB, a BM 710 on my right IWB and a varying knife in RFP, usually a BM750 or a micarta calypso jr.

I don't see how the things you mention would indicate any reason to stereotype you into a specific racial category, or would be a reason to refer to you in steretoypical racial terms.

cut finger,

I appreciate your perspective. I hope one day people in this forum and the owner and censors of this forum would be as considerate to people of my race as you say they have been to yours. I hope you continue to receive the courtesy that should be extended to people of all races.

I've got to say that I'm with Mr. Knife on this one.
If we can only persuade people to be offended by things that they previously found unoffensive, the World would be a better place!
Am I a Redneck?
No.

Senator,
Duct tape is pretty permanent. I only have to put more on the fenders of my truck every other time I change the oil

You know what I hate? Political Correctness. And having to be careful so as not to hurt someone's feelings. And someone telling me that if I spank my 3 year old she'll hate me and have a self esteem problem. I hate Equal Opportunity, because it's anything but that. And lump affirmative action in with that one. I hate being told how to look, how to act, what I can and can't have. I'm tired of being told what to eat. I'm tired of people wasting 90% of their time on 10% of the problem. What's it your business how much I drink? I'm tired of snake oil selling politicians, and laws that aren't enforced. I'm tired of punk kids who don't have any respect because no one ever turned them over their knee. I'm tired of everyone worrying about the homeless, when elderly people are rotting in nasty homes so no one has to be burdened of the thought of growing old. I'm tired of tree huggers worrying about whales in a frigging ocean I've never heard of while children in America starve to death. I'm sick of hearing about who the president banged, who gives a rat's ass. Don't even talk to me about racism. Buttholes are buttholes, there's no getting around that. But if you can't relax, and make fun of yourself every now and then, then joke you! Here's what you do: Spank kids, care for and fully respect the elderly, and make people make their own way for a change, that'll teach them. As a matter of fact, get rid of this social security crap and welfare alltogether, and force people to learn to care for, respect, and help each other out once again.

Did I mention my knife is a MUDT?

Thank you for your patience.

Oh dear......

As I am posting for the second time in this thread, I have to bring up the "idea" that this was about "how many of y'all rednecks carry what kinda knives??"

Holy crapola this was a way out topic drift!!!!
