Any reference for this?

I am looking for a listing of traditional patterns and how they got their name. I remember reading it on one of the traditional forums a long time ago. Is there one here and I missed it?

Many patterns are descriptive (dog-leg jack, gun stock whittler, canoe, etc). Others are based on intended use (trapper, stockman, etc). Others still neither describe the knife or the use (senator, congress, etc). The reality is that pocket knife manufacturers made thousands of different patterns in an age before full color catalogs and needed to call them SOMETHING. Bernard Levine's Guide to Knives and their Values, Fourth Edition would be a good place to start.

That's the best all-around source for pretty much any question you'd have on slipjoints, and most knives in general. They're pricey, but occasionally, they show up on Amazon for a reasonable cost. And make sure you get the 4th edition.

I keep it bookmarked in my browser, and occasionally Bernard will have signed copies available, too. (You can PM him here, I believe.)
