Any reliable .22 pistols made?

I concure on the field strip. I have a Mk 1 and a Mk lll. The first couple times I had to field strip it I had to get some help from my dad putting a couple parts back together. They are great guns. I love my bull barrel government model.

I'm sorry that government model is a Mk II.

Ruger 22's were preferred by SOG teams in Vietnam, if that gives you any insight to their performance and reliability. If they could be used reliably in the jungle for black ops, then light plinking and varmint hunting should be cake.

Thanks guys, I think I might do the Ruger thing.

Sounds like the Ruger .22 is the AK-47 of the rimfire world.

I still trust the Hi Standard 9shot .22 revolver more... and would still recommend it above the Ruger Mark 3 for a backpacking companion.

My .44 is my backpacking companion.
It's just big enough to jam into the bears mouth while he mauls me.:)

The Rugers Mk series, Browning Buckmarks, and Colt Woodsmans are all very reliable, and all use a similar layout. The ones I've had trouble with were the "tactical" looking models, like the Sig Mosquito and Walther P22. The magazine angle, feedramp, and short barrels seem to combine to make no end of trouble. My Walther was actually pretty reliable, but it ejected spent cases directly at my face, which got old very quickly.

This one has never failed me yet-

I agree with the Ruger. But I do have to include the caveat that .22s can be finicky with ammo and it is best to try out different brands to find the type your pistol likes best. My 22/45 does not like the bulk Remington that comes in the green box.

S&W Airlite 22 LR is a great firearm with a 3" barrel, front and rear sights and super light weight in an 8 shot revolver. I sure like mine. I think the new ones have fiber optic sights on the front. Mine is the original without but these are basically going to shoot anything from Calibri rounds, CB Long and Short rounds, and regular 22 LR all day long with no worries at all. .

For that matter my little North American Arms Black Widow 22LR 22 Mag conversion cylinder pistol is a swiss clock for reliable shooting also. Not the most accurate gun you'll ever shoot but for snakes and rats and a little snake shot ammo its a lot of fun and also very light weight for easy carry. This one is a five shot revolver but its single action only unlike the Airlite which is double.

First off, I know a .22 revolver is reliable. I’m not interested in a revolver.

I have a couple of .22 rifles that feed very well even on cheap ammo. However, I have not found a pistol that feeds inexpensive ammo without jamming or reliability problems.

I understand that using premium ammo like CCI Stingers or something will help. But that doesn’t count as cheap ammo in my book.

Does anyone have a 3-5” barrel semiautomatic pistol that reliably feeds cheap .22 LR rounds?

Thanks in advance.

Oops. My bad man. Might have helped if I read the first post. Okay then. Good luck finding you a semi auto 22 that shoots what you want. I tried for a long time and finally went with the Smith mentioned. The Ruger is a darn nice choice in a semi auto IMO. Browning BuckMarks are fairly good too. I've had both but they were both fairly picky for ammo choice, particularly the Browning.

My 4" Ruger 22/45 has been 100% reliable. I keep it clean and have fed it Federal bulk pack the most. Nice little gun.

I personally carry a Taurus 357 model 651 for backpacking purposes, the 22 I pack is my Remington 510T Targetmaster 1926, breaks down with a single screw into stock and action. Very packable, very durable, simple single shot bolt action rifle that weighs 2 pounds total. It's not the most ideal .22 cal survival rifle but it definately does the job, it's a lead laser with CCI Green Tag.

I have both a Ruger MKII and a Browning Buckmark. Aside from running a bore snake down the barrel and adding some lube, I have never cleaned either guns in over 10-years ownership of ach of them. They both shoot cheap .22lr I find by the brick, and they are both used for woods bumming in a leather flap holster that I had made.

Never experienced the jamming issues that others report with their .22s.

what he ^ said, 'cept substitute a Ruger single six convertible instead of the MKII. Oh, and a six inch barrel on the Single Six.

No scopes. Great adjustable sights on the Buckmark.

I have Ruger Mk IIs and IIIs. IMO, as a long time gunsmith and former competition shooter, there are no better 22 pistols to be had! As for jamming, no. I shoot the cheapest 22 ammo I can find and I cannot recall EVER having a jam/stovepipe/failure to fire with ANY of my three Rugers. They just shoot and keep on shooting. My MK II is a ten inch barrel model and it is deadly out to ranges most would not believe a 22 pistol could attain.

Also a Mk II here. Solid, reliable, fun to shoot.

Not so hard to field strip. It's the reassembly that's the fun part. Putting that main spring housing back in with the hammer in the right spot so it'll actually shoot when you're done...Good times.

I had a Ruger Mk. 2...... and I always tried to shoot federal 22LR ammo out of it and would get at least 5 or 6 failures to feed in one day of shooting..... after about 6 trips to the range, I decided to sell it....... It would perform flawlessly with higher quality .22 ammo, but I wanted a handgun that would function with any ammo I put through it....... Haha I actually decided to replace it with a .40 S&W Beretta 90-Two :D

As stated the Ruger MK II.
