i got my brother a starters pack for stock removal knifemaking... knowing nothing of... well... anything, i went with a basic crafstman set.
it included

-9" drill press
---2 sets of cobalt drill bits (from 1/36"-1/4")

---365 part dremel accessorry pack (wich i wish i had gotten for myself)
-6" bench grinder w/rough and fine grit stones
-a set of handled crafstman hand files, triangle, round, bastard, half round half flat, rasp (because he can replace them at will, being poor this is an excellent feature)
-an extra 12" non handled crafstman bastard file
-a set of crafsman needle files (flat, round, half round half flat, triangle (?) )
mistellanious (sp?)
-edgepro apex model sharpening system with extra 120 stone, and 2 extra 12 packs of polishing tapes (3000 and 4000 grits)
-husky contractors hacksaw
-2 sets of rough, medium and fine cobalt hacksaw blades, plus an extra medium. also a remgrit blade, and 2 remgrit wires.
-packs (15-25 sheets) of 100, 180, 220, 320, 400, 600, 100, 1500, and 2500 -grit sand papers
and i think thats all of it...
i got myself the hacksaw, 4x36"/6" sander combo, sand paper and files.
