Any shop christmas presents?

I got a Stained DVD and the new A Perfect Circle cd which was one of my favorite bands but it is a political Bush bashing CD that sucks. :( My wife asked if I liked it and I didn't lie. My parents gave me $50 which they really couldn't afford to do. I was hoping to use some of it to send my knife I am making to Roger to heat treat but it didn't happen. I will have to wait a couple weeks now if Roger will still accept it then. Pretty lean Christmas here but oh well, I spent it with my family.

Looks like heaven has smiled on a lot of good makers this year. :D This thread has done much better than the standard 10% response rate, which tells me our families really do support this work. That's a wonderful thing.

We didn't exchange gifts this year because we're saving our money for a trip to Mexico in a couple weeks. But I got a decent bonus from work this year and I bought a year's worth (yeah, sure) of belts, a couple sides of leather, about 30 lbs of O1, some of the misc tools on my "nice to have" list, some Micarta and a new band saw blade. (I also re-made the commitment to hold some money back from each sale to pay for materials in the future. I used to be very good at that but then I lost it and have been scratching for materials ever since. Let's hope I learned my lesson!)

I hope you all have a prosperous and productive 2005! Happy New Year folks.

Mama got me a new broom, dustpan and a box of extra large trashbags . Is there a message in there some where?

Bring that stuff with you up here Carl. I need to clean out the shop before I set up my new KMG grinder :D

Somewhat belated post here, but Linda bought me a new copy of "The Arte of Engraving," by James Meeks. Better watch out now! ;)

The fiance got me a new heat-gun and a rivet press for x-mas. :D

What do you use the heatgun for? Just currious :D

Ahhh... ;) hadnt thought of that. I may have to try kydex in the future. But I am just more of a traditionalist type guy.

Oh yeah - My stepson has his knife in a velvet lined box on the top shelf of his closet ;) He said "I wont use it on wood and hard stuff like that"
I laughed and told him it is a tool and to use it on anything he likes.(except concreat and steel beams but then he did see me open up a folding chair so who knows) I thought it was sweet that he thought enough of it to put it up for safe keeping.

Hey now, don't be giving away my heat-treating secrets. :)

I like both kydex and leather a lot, but some customers prefer kydex so I gots to do what I gots ta do. :D

got myself two sturdy million pocket tool bags, to forged stell square stake anvils of different sizez, a stake bottom fuller, and $200 for grinder/sander, drill press, parts, etc. My 2lb and 3lb crosspein hammers, as well as my wolf jaw tongs are on the way- everything that I need to get started.

Last year, I only asked the Wife for one thing. A Drill Doctor. She didn't get it for me.

This year, I went and bought it for myself. Got the highest priced model, too! :)

Mama got me a copy of "Knives 2005" and told me I need to get to work and be in the 2006 issue.

My son got me an Oxygen-Acetylene outfit designed for AC/Ref folks............Small bottles, but I am on the lookout for larger sized bottles.

Mama continues to support my "Bad Habit" of buying knife making supplies.......Hope this continues.

well... i guess this would be kinda the place to put it- wondering on buying the craftsmen beltsander/grinder combo that's about $89. Any comments- good or bad about it would be great.

That was my first one. Way too fast but it works. If you can save up for a grizzley grinder I'd do that. But if you cant...go for it ;) I think alot of us start on that type of grinder.

will it eat up the steel, or just tugg a little bit?

If you can save up for a grizzley grinder I'd do that
which one- I may have enough if it is a decent investment, and not priced like a kmg

thanks a ton!

If I were in your shoes I'd get this over the craftsman hands down. Put a decent platen on this and you are in business.

I bet if you email J.Nelson he will fill you in on the specifics.

The craftsman is okay but lacks the power and too much speed. Sort of bounce around alot but it works.

I got a stable Craftsman tool chest, full of hand tools from my wife and three daughters. My big score was from a couple of my customers. One gave me a 280# toolrest from a huge lathe tvpe machine used for metal spinning. In its next life it wiil be my first anvil. Another guy gave me a box with about 15 new soft fire bricks in it. My pile of forge materials is just about finished. :D Now all I need is an acetalene regulater and some glazing stuff for my kaowool and I can geterdun :D :D . Happy New Year to all. S.Bryan Sayles

Wow, that's a nice grinder- I've got $400, but I need forge supplies and steel. I gues that It's gonna be sand paper and files until the petsitting and babysitting buisness gets cooking again.
Thanks- I now have a new goal.

btw- where can I get a different platen and what is the problem with that one?

The platen is sort of...not flat but roughly flat. You can get a platic pyrocream sp? one form some on here I am sure. I'd rather have that one grizzley than 4 craftsman ones.
Glad I could help ;)
