I have noticed that the majority on knife forums prefer carbon steels to stainless steels. Just want to see how many on here are stainless fans. I think I lean more towards stainless because I live in the very humid miami fl. Maintaining a non stainless knife down here can sometimes be a pain.

Really? I've found just the opposite. Nearly everyone here seems to love 154cm and S30V, plus all of the latest and greatest powder metal stainless steels coming out.

I like both.

I won't buy a knife in carbon. Patinas look awful to me. I don't own choppers...a machete is as close as I get to that.

I don't have very much of a preference. I like knives to be stainless, but I'll sacrifice corrosion resistance for better edge holding, higher toughness, and finer grains if I can.

I like both carbon and stainless. I prefer carbon for a fixed blade, like a good 1095 in my Ka-Bar, so that I know it will be up to any task I throw at it. I like a good stainless in my folders, because the folders go through about 1/10 the abuse I would put on a fixed blade, and knowing it is unlikely to rust is always nice.

I used to only want stainless folders and fixed blades, but slowly I've been warming up to carbon tool steels like CPM-M4.

Carbon steels won't disintegrate overnight like some people seem to think--I EDC'd a 1095 blade for a lot of food prep, and only lemons and oranges seemed to discolor the blade.

I use mostly high grade stainless knives, not saying carbon isn't awesome as well, I just prefer more advanced steels (of the stainless variety) like s30v Aus8 and vg10, all which in my experience take a niiice edge.

I would take a "cheap" carbon steel (as in opinel etc) over a "cheap" stainless (as in Victorinox etc) anyday. In my experience they are easier to sharpen and hold a nice edge longer, which are more important features to me than stain resistance.
I love higher end stainless steels however. The steel-snob in me loves the crazyness of replacing more and more iron with chromium, vanadium, tungsten and whatnot, but the simplicity of a good carbon steel has its attractiveness as well.
Please don't be offended by the "cheap", I carry a SAK everyday and love it, I just couldn't think of a better word.

I guess I have been looking at the wrong threads.....

Is there some type of comparison chart on here that compares stainless steels to carbon steels? I see a lot of people raving about the edge retention of a basic carbon steel like 1095 but in my use I haven't noticed much difference compared to my stainless blades . Then again most of my stainless blades are higher end steels like s30v etc. not bashing carbon steels in any way, this its ment to be informative and to see other peoples opinions.

Carbon steels have the advantage of strength, at the cost of being rust-prone. If you take care of it, a good carbon steel like 1095 will last you forever.

I like carbon because it's easy to sharpen and holds a nice edge, dont know why people make all the fuzz for the rust thing. Stainless is ok also, like someone said before, i like it more on folders.

I suppose you meant "fuss". To me rust is disgusting and unacceptable on any knife.

I like both stainless and non stainless, but I like high wear resistant, high alloy steels.

I like steel.

Stainless is good.
Non-Stainless is good.

It's all good.
