I prefer stainless. I'm mostly a folder guy so it's only natural. I'm pretty sure no one prefers to have to care for their steels to keep them from rusting. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of money & effort to get stainless steels that approach half of the toughness of carbon steels.
...A random thought occurred to me when I should've been sleeping. Why hasn't anyone replaced carbon with nitrogen in the straight carbon steels? Is this only possible with PM technology? I actually lost a few minutes of sleep fantasizing about a non-rusting M4 or 5160. I have no life.
