Any thoughts on Al Mar?

I've always admired Al Mar, he was a fine man and and an honorable warrior. His knives reflected the dependability of the man. Many of them truly do seem to be imbued with his serene fortitude....

Fine knives, I've never really seen a bad one of the earlier productions. Probably some of the best fitted and finished production knives ever.

I wanted a SERE when they first came out, just never did it, I've finally rectified that omission;

(That's a GEC #23 for size comparison. The SERE is a VERY large, very solid folder.)

Some of the later productions are curious, I'm not sure if his fertile mind was their progenitor, but I've still seen excellent fit and finish.

And the warrior spirit is a tangible part of the cachet in owning one.

You could certainly do worse in choosing a knife....

I came across this great post over in the Spyderco pix thread just the other day.

Just in case there are still some people who don't quite 'get' the Sage 4 tribute to Al Mar knives.

OK, I just wanted to show off my Al Mars ;)

They are seriously cool knives, I just wish the classics were at least VG-10.
I am trying hard not to collect too many, because they are bound to
upgrade the blade steel sooner or later.

"I hear about all of the spydercos, benchmades, kershaws, etc... (and love all of 'em) but don't hear much or see many reviews on Al Mar folders."

Al Mar makes some beautiful knives, but they bear little resemblance to the usual Spyderco, Benchmade, and Kershaw knives that are typically discussed on BladeForums. First, take the Al Mar handle - it's very good looking but smooth. No one who posts a question about how well you can grip a knife handle, or how much jimping there is, or how strong the tip is, is going to consider an Al Mar, except possibly as a backup gentleman's knife. The fact is that most people who post on BladeForums are interested in working, or possibly tactical, knives - not gentleman's knives.

Personally, I think the Al Mar knives are very good looking, and I would certainly buy one myself - but to compare them to the standard Benchmades and Spydercos is comparing apples to oranges.

The Sere 2K is no gentleman's knife.

Well, I guess mine is. I am a gentleman.

Al Mar knives have absolutely skyrocketed in price and I have no idea why. They are still made the same, same materials, etc. If the Sere 2K was $120 EVERYBODY would have one. I remember when they were $99 bucks brand new and you could pick em up used off the forums for $70. Now they are all of a sudden a $200+ knife? What happened?!

I can't speak for the folders, but I have had a SERE 2000 operator for a couple years, I use it camping and hunting. The fit and finish are better than many custom knives I have owned or handled and above 99% of production knives I have seen. Absolutely love my sere and it is my go to knife.
