Any thoughts on the CQC-7A?

Amici,
Been thinking of picking up a 7A to add to the stable in a conventional V ground spear point, but my question is, is it worth it?

If given a choice, what would it be, the Tanto or the Spear for EDC and why?

Cheers,
Serge

I'm pretty sure I haven't ever seend the 7A in person, but it looks awkward. The tanto just fits the knife very well. I own a tanto version and it's my only tanto knife. I like the 7 tanto because it looks perfect. The 7A seems like a compromise to me. Also, with the super thick stock, the tanto is GREAT as a utility blade. One day for a friend I stabbed through a piece of aluminum duct multiple times as to give him a hole to start his cut with snips up at the cabin. I didn't leave a mark on the blade and worked like a charm. ...It is a lot more intimidating looking knife in the tanto version though. WAY more intimidating. The chisel grind has also grown on my a ton. I much prefer the look of the chisel grind on that particular knife. I love everything about the Emerson 7 now. It's my only Emerson.

As a side note, my Emerson has went from a sticky lock and not so smooth, to the smoothest knife I own, with a crisp lock up, and a detent click sound and feel that is almost from heaven. I know that sounds ridiculous, but the detent is the first thing people mention when the use the knife. Like I said, I am not a huge Emerson fan because big scary knives aren't really my thing, but my CQC7 has the best feeling opening and closing out of all my other knives (spyderco, benchmade, etc).

Cqc-7a is one of the best edc knives I've ever owned. I had the waved version. extreme outfitters used to have a SOCFK with the A blade. That was awesome as well.

I love mine, but always favor my tanto version. Both great and I recommend them both.

I went with both. Still have not carried the CQC-7A, it is still brand new. I may offload it, still have not decided.

Although I don't like serrations, I hope you enjoy your new blades!

Thanks. I am not the biggest serrations fan either. I like them on my around the house/yard knives, I carry a plain edge commander at work.

I chose the CQC-7AW and love it!! It is more of a utility knife than the tanto, and chose it for that reason. Easier to sharpen, and the V grind is much more appealing to me as well.

I got a question. How long does it usually take for the sticky lock to go bye bye on the 7? Taking it apart isn't going to fix that is it? I've had it for just four days now and I was hoping that one day it just magically goes away. Not yet.

I have a CQC-7AW-BT, and yes, the lock is sticky. I also had to take it apart when it was new and clean out all the crap. The knife was so stiff and hard to open, but now it is smoothing out after using tuf glide.

I also wonder if/when the sticky lock will resolve itself.

Just use #2 pencil lead on the tang interface where the lock connects..

smooth as butter after that.

It takes a little while to loosen the sticky lock, but taking it apart and cleaning to gunk out helps along with loosening the pivot slightly. Then when bored cycling it with either pencil lead or sharpy on the lock area. Once done though it becomes smooth as silk.

Yeah, I know that. I've done that before on Ti framelocks, I have one that I've been doing that to for over a year now, gets old. Figuring the7 hopefully will iron itself out with some time, it's not THAT bad - nothing like a Ti framelock. Apologies to the OP - I didn't mean to hijack his thread. In response to Sergemaster. Just get one. I think I am starting to understand the "Emerson Thing"...I don't buy into hype - I want to see for myself and so far (minus a little sticking) I am extremely impressed with The7. I'll see how "hard use" this folder is suppose to be. :-)

Yep. Knife was VERY stiff when I bought it AND it was a tad off center. A couple slight movements of the pivot fixed both of them, the blade magically centered itself perfectly. I remember someone in here once saying something like/ or about "a hydraulic feel" in opening and closing the blade. I TOTALLY understand what they meant now. Soooo smooth but yet something different in the movement of the blade from my other pieces and I have a few.

I will say that I have grown to love this knife, but for $200, I should not have had to take it apart, clean it, and now keep putting pencil lead on the lock so it doesn't stick. It is kind of disappointing, honestly.
