can someone point me toward some instructions or tutorials on how to work with stag/deer antlers? mostly i'm interested in finishing/preserving techniques. how do we go from gray, rough, dry antlers laying around in the forest to nicely finished surfaces? do i treat stag like wood or are the methods different?

thanks.

You don't.
Antlers in that condition have already suffered greatly from over exposure to the elements. I guess they could be used, but you'll not get them to look like freshly dropped sheds.
That would be like getting an old piece of drift wood to look new.
Ain't gonna happen.
You need to get antlers collected shortly after dropping, and still should allow them to stabilize in a protected environment for a few months.
The methods of finishing antlers vary in the same amount as the # of makers.
I grind to fit, take the altered areas up to 1500 - 2000 grit and polish.
