Originally this pattern was known as a Jenny Lind, after a world famous Swedish opera singer in the 1800s -- most likely this naming comes from around 1840-1850, give or take a bit - and likely it was given to a pattern already in existence. Of course, scale the pattern up, widen it a little, and it becomes the swellcenter balloon pattern. Don't know when it took on the "tuxedo" name.
