Any unusual wedges?

Here's what ive found in my new beat up Welland Vale house axe. hum, i could almost start a hardware store with those.

I still think several .223 bullets* driven in would make a head (axe head) reluctant to come loose.

*separated from the shell cases of course...

May not be all that unusual, but I don't remember seeing a head wedged like this before. The head was loose and I couldn't get it tight so I drove the handle out. The flat spot (red arrow second pic) was from the punch I used.

I am pretty sure this was a claw hatchet. Head weight = 1 lb. 6.7 oz., blade = 3", head length = 6".

I would be interested to hear of any unusual wedges you have found in your tools. Recently I bought a nice little axe. The head is very good the haft is excellent....But instead of a wooden wedge it had 5 nails a screw and a beer cap. Of course they have since been replaced.

Regards...Frank. p.s. The cap was from an ugly brand too.
What brewery or beer was it from DB,Lion or Tui ?

Thought I'd share this "grellner" patent wedge. I've seen them advertised exclusively for use in keen kutter axes and hatchets. This one being a boy's axe only had one hole.

One thing I should've added is you can see how messed up the eye wood was from me prying and cutting and prying some more to remove the grellner wedge. I had a hell of a time getting that thing out. They work! I straightened out the pin more after this photo and it took some filing and planning to make sure the pin went through the wedge properly. Part of me wanted to leave it alone after i purchased it because it was original. But i couldn't leave the head loose like it was. I ended up cutting about 3/4" off the total haft length. Couldn't help myself!

It's an old thread but this seemed to "fit":

Splitlock/spring washers are better than other things I guess... They do get wider on one side...
I was hoping they were some long lost gold Krugerrand coins stashed in the tongue.

That is the most recent example I have seen, with extreme effort, to avoid a task.
I know I didn't do it...I never worked with a double bit till recently:D

I think Al wedges are left proud on race axes for easy changing/maintenance of hafts. I suppose you could cut one or maybe sink it all the way. I think an Al wedge left proud on a work/woods axe would get knocked out of place easily.

That drift is nice and I might buy one!

All of the nails, the large screw, and two of the regular wedges came out of a Chinese hatchet with an interesting story. It had a chunk of double bit handle? driven onto it upside down which, as you know, means that the eye taper is upside down. As a result of that the head (obviously) came loose a few times which led to all of the hack job attempts at fixing it. I think the order goes: regular wedges, flooring nails, and finally the really long screw. After that it was retired and then given to me. As a side note, does anyone recognize the wedges on the bottom right? They are stamped sheet metal, non-ridged, with a tapered crescent ridge stamped along the length of them (if that makes sense).
