Found a 3 horse power 110/220 volt single phase motor for $65.00. I believe it said 1725 RPM. The picture of it was at a funny angle but the name brand started with Bal...? Under that it said industrial motor.

Seems like a good deal to me if I can use it to power a grinder or something?

Hi Mike,

It does sound good. Baldor is a big name in good motors. If the enclosure is TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) that's the best. I think every Baldor motor I ever saw was TEFC. Even if the bearings are worn and the motor needs an overhaul it still might be a good deal. Baldor motors of that hp often sell in the hundreds, even used.

Good luck! -Phil

I am looking for a 2hp motor locally, new it is going to cost me $300, I wish I could find one cheaper.

With that much power, you could modify the KMG clone plan's, and add a buffer on the backside!

anyone using a buffer of over a half horsepower for knifemaking is a suicidal fool. Yes, buy the motor, put it on a grinder or a hydraulic press (or give it to me). if you need a buffer, get a half horse buffer motor. strong words yes, but the most dangerous tool in a knife shop is a buffer.

i have a 3/4 hp on my buffer but i know how to use one safely. i learned many years ago where i used to work at how to use high speed buffers.

Most dangerous tool in a knifeshop is the knifemaker (followed closely by the buffer:))!

I don't think how much HP the buffer has matters that much. When it grabs a piece of steel and flings it thru what ever it is the speed of the wheel not the power that does it. A 1/2 hp can maim as easily as a 3 HP. I believe a fast 1/2 hp buffer with a loose buff is more dangerous than a slow 3hp with a couple hard felt wheels. 3 hp is way more than you want on a buffer. But, the point stands that buffers are very dangerous. The motor should be great on a grinder.

I gave one of those big motors to Mace , I think he used it for a power hammer.

my rule on buffers is never get one that is more powerful than what I can comfortably stall with one hand, 1/3-1/2 horse is my limit

Thanks guys. I already have a couple of 1/2 horse motors sitting around and I was going to use one for a buffer. Also had a 4-inch belt grinder given to me yesterday with a 1/2 horse motor on it. It needs a bit of TLC but should be a good one to start with...I hope!
