any way to boost the maximum temp of an electric kiln a couple hundred deg F?

my father is upgrading to a larger glass furnace and giving me his smaller one. the maximum temperature its rated for is 1700F. this is a Paragon electric kiln, only a few years old. 1700 is fine for a lot of steels but the higher chrome and alloy steels, stainless etc harden around 1850ish, some as high as 1900. I was just wondering if there is anything I could do to get a couple hundred more degrees out of this guy, esp for D2. not a big deal if I can't, I can always drive across town and use his other kiln that goes up to 2000f but I'd like to be able to do this at home.

EDIT: this is the model: http://www.paragonweb.com/F120.cfm

lol, yeah I was guessing it probably couldn't be done because if it was built for higher temps it would be rated for them. paragon would just try to get me to buy one of their knife kilns. I guess I could probably sell it and upgrade but since I already have access to another one that gets hot enough for D2 I don't need to bother. I can still use this one for 01 and 1095.

It's probably an issue of replacing the elements. The safety part of it comes town to the rating of the relays or contactors that the kiln uses. Call the manufacturer of the kiln and talk to them about it. If it's as simple as replacing elements, it's likely to be ~$100 or so to do. If you have to swap relays or contactors the price can go up a bit.

yeah I'm starting to think the controller might need to be replaced, I don't think it will even let you set it for temps higher than its rated for. rather than risking electrocuting myself I think I'll leave it alone lol. the more I think about this the more its sounding like a bad idea.

This may not be so difficult as you think. We had an EvenHeat that was set up for glass - max 1800 - and it was a simple matter of reprogramming the controller for 2200. EvenHeat was very helpful. I suspect Paragon would be too.

wow, ok. I'll see if they can help then. I hope its that easy for me. I really only need 200F max more. thanks
