Any way to tighten a pinned Pacific Salt?

I just received a new Pacific Salt (with the H1 logo on the blade) from New Graham.

The blade has considerable blade play when locked, and can be rattled against the inside of the handles when closed.

I've owned quite a few Spyderco's and have never seen this before. I was wondering if there is a way for me to tighten this up myself or if the knife needs to be sent to Spyderco. I do believe the pins are rivets, which means a light tap on one side should be able to tighten everything up a bit.

Any input would be great. I'd really rather not send this in, as I returned an Atlantic Salt for the Pacific and the whole ordeal has taken about a month. I'd really like to be able to use the knife I've been waiting for.

Thanks!

I would contact NG, then, if nothing comes up, Spyderco. I tightened balisongs by hammer tapping in the past, and you can ruin a knife (bending of the pin) in this manner fairly easily.

NG has been great to me, and I'm sure I've been nothing but a headache to them recently. I would like to avoid bringing them into the picture, as they didn't produce the knife.

The blade play is acceptable to sell, I would say, I'm just not happy with it. My Atlantic Salt was extremely smooth yet still locked up tight as can be. I can live with the Pac the way it is, I would just prefer it a bit tighter.

Thanks for the info. Anybody else care to contribute?

Yes, when I read this I remembered tightening up the rivets on an aluminum canoe. One hammer on the outside, then swat the rivet head on the inside. Snuged them right up. But, as this fella said, there is the possibility of bending a pin. If the knife wasnt expensive Id lay it on an anvil or vise base and tap, using discretion. Sometimes a little goes a long way. Id try it, but the question is whether you are willing to chance messing up your knife.

This has been covered many times over on the Spyderco factory forums, and probably quite a bit here as well. Don't remember seeing it in some time though.

You can repair it yourself if you have the confidence. Put a razor blade in between the handle and blade, then very gently tap the pivot with a hammer. Pull the razor blade out and check the fit.

Or just send it in.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined, I'll give it a go and post back with results.

Good tip with the razor blade, I'll give that a try.

Thanks!

Well I just used a piece of flat steel stock and a small hammer and tightened it up a bit.

I wasn't able to get it quite as tight as I like it, but it is at a point now that I am happy.

Thanks guys, this knife is going to see a lot of hard use so I'm sure it would have loosened up over time anyway.

I had a similar problem with a Pacific Salt I ordered a little over a year ago. It came in an incredible sloppy state. I ended up sending it back to Spyderco, and they replaced it with one that was essentially flawless... From what I gathered at the time, there was a bad shipment.

Hmm. How long ago was this? I gather mine is rather new as it has the new H1 laser engraving on the blade.

I 'spose I voided my warranty by saying in public that I banged on the pin with a hammer, though. :D

It didn't do much good, I think I'll just keep the knife, it is within "working" tolerances.
