My wife just asked me, so I am posting this question on her behalf. I am curious myself. I have yet to meet a woman knife nut. I have met wives of collectors at shows who were knowledgeable of their spouses wares, etc.

TKC is of the female persuasion.
There are several others among this mostly male group.

Yes, there are a few women who post here, and more who read but don't post much.

For reasons I don't entirely understand, I have long observed that nearly all American women were raised to be scissors oriented, rather than knife oriented. My wife has learned to use and appreciate knives quite a lot, but it's taken her decades to do that. Still, 90% of the time she reaches for scissors to do a job that I'd choose a knife for. I think only a handful of women appreciate knives and use them regularly. I'm not speaking of kitchen and table knives now, but only a very few women will carry a knife in their purse and use it from time to time. It's just one more item on the long list of things I don't understand about women. ;)

I have carried a knife for almost 34 years now. I am into custom knives and CRK's. My Mom got me started too.

Yes, and I don't have a lot of knives. I carry daily.... Whether a Chive or a Charlie May, I always have something on me. I love 'em. :D

I would love to hear how your mom got you started using and carrying knives. I hang out in the Traditional Subforum and have heard numerous stories regarding "dad's or grandad's pocketknife". But, never Mom's.

I just wish it was more acceptable to carry a fixed blade on your belt than it currently is. Also there is more of a male culture of knife use than female knife use.

I'm 20 and my Dad always was doting on me when I was a little girl and taking me with him on long hikes. He always carried a knife and at least a pistol with us. So I was never repulsed by these like so many girls (and more and more boys) instead I was fascinated and saw them as useful. When I was older he would let me use and carry just about any knife he owned, plus showed me how to handle and care for them as well as instructed me in the use of firearms. Now he has passed down many knives he's collected over the years to me and I will buy others that appeal to me, so I have over 80 nice knives and many more cheaper ones. They and firearms are functional works of art to me. My Dad ingrained in me at an early age the love of the outdoors and all that goes with it. He has my lifelong respect and thanks for this.

My Mom and I used to go camping a lot when I was a kid, as well as fishing, and she said that a knife was a neccessity; a very useful tool. So, I always had one with me. My Mom still carries a knife every day, as do I.What has been for me, is that it is MY turn to buy her some great knives!

as i tell mine and she jest got her MBA ... good girl!

I gave to my wife (my girlfriend then) a Victorinox swisscard as a gift and she soon recognized how useful is to have some basic tool with her although I never convinced her to carry a full SAK. Then I gave her a little spyderco Ladybug that she carries in her keyring paired with a photon light, she uses it a lot but I thought that was all for her in regards to knife usage not cooking related.

However some months ago she confessed that was pondering to carry another folder mainly for food slicing since she likes to go with our daughter to the city parks and have some fresh fruit with them. I offered her my help to choose a SAK but she gladly surprised me by telling that she already has looked into my catalogs and had choosen a Spyderco Centofante 3, which I happily bought for her as soon as possible.

¿Could it be the start of her own knife collection?

My wife collects on a small scale.. She likes a lot of different styles. She has some slippies and a few other things. I got her a Kershaw Scallion a coouple months ago, she lovesit.. I gotta admit I really kinda like it to..

Don't forget to tell your wife that the lovely Angelina Jolie is a member here too.....

From my conversations (very limited) with women about knives, these women want a knife that is large enough to easily do the job. One that is also large enough to easily hold on to when cutting something. They don't like little folders.

These women weren't interested in collecting knives but needed a tool to do a particular job. They viewed a paring knife as small. How many of our folders are as large and beefy as the average paring knife?

I think guys are more interested in small knives. Mabye partly because we worry more about carry laws. These women would put anything in their pruse if they felt they
would need it, knowing they weren't going to stick someone, but they had a job to do.

I'd have to say my wife is about the same. She doesn't collect, but because of me, she EDC's 1 of 4 knives of her own. All of them high end production. And she understands the need for a good knife for any purpose. I get to sharpen them though... ;)

every girl I have dated for any period of time I buy a knife for. Most of them have used them constantly and wondered how they had ever gone so long without one.

I think you would be surprised at the collectors (females), but one of them who happens to be my friend never posts a buy or shows her collection off. She quietly buys with emails and pm's. She is well known to several makers on the forum. I really think she is NOT in the minority, just cautious.
