Anyone hear news on this? Mr. Glesser said something about the end of february didn't he? Waiting to spend my money with spyderco...

JC

Don't know when, but definitely NOT the end of February, or even the end of March. I would be suprised to see it this year.

Here is the last thing Sal wrote about the "Military Jr."

Hi. First of all, my apologies on not having the model in motion and not getting back sooner. Carlos pretty much has give the background, thanx much. I guess I can bring you up to date. the original design was a linerlock. Then we decided to change to a compression lock so the design was re-engineered. Then our in-house prototype guy left the company so the design sat while others were being worked on.

We're going back now to make up protos and make sure that everything works. My plan is to have a sample ready by Blade show in June.

There have been some other changes since the last design was penned. New steels. So if actual production does happen on the smaller Mil, we have more options.

So as long as we're here, and there seems to be some interest, handle material and color are now in question. Perhaps I could get a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice in handle material and color? Compression locks do not require the G10 rigidity that a linerlock does so there are more options.

This is unfortunate news! But true to Spyderco tradition, best to take time to get it right the first time. Compression lock is excellent revision. My humble opinions,
1) handle material: I like g10 for good combination of strength and texturing for grip. If almite can be manufactured with 'grippy "surface this may be good choice. Of course, titanium is ideal for weight/strength and, can be integral lock like on Salsa. This may be expensive but, in size and base on large Military's reputation it could compete favourably with higher price folders including customs, for many end users.
2) Color I would prefer more subdued ( sp?) colors like black, grey, darker blue or green. but more important it should avoide design like on Salsa almite, but that's my own opinion.

Finally I would favour steel other than 440v, maybe this would be good for s30v if Spyderco is considering it or, equallt bg42. Even vg10 over 440v would get my humble support.

thank you for excellent knives,

Martin

Isn't a Mini Millie basically a new Delica? Similar shape, flat ground blade. Why not just offer the Delica in G10?

Anyway, I'm all for a Mini Millie :)

Delica in g10 was what Spyderco Standard was in essence. Military conceptually is closer to Calypso and Calypso Jr., full flat grind instead of saber grind, and also finger choil. Also, compression lock vs lock back. I believe Delica still use 3/32" stock while Military Jr probably would use 1/8" full flat ground stock.
It would be Delica "on steroids" :)

Yes, yes...I'd like to see the proto!

Happy to hear the new mini-millie will have a compression lock, I really don't care for linerlocks.

Haven't thought much about what handle materials, but I do know it's gotta be OD green!

Please go with colored G-10, green would be good. As for steel, I can't decide whether I'd like VG-10 or 400v.

I know I am not very active here and as much ... my input probably wouldnt account for much.. but ...

If G10 isn't "essential" to the integrity of the over all knife.. I think micarta (:barf: I know... blasphemy) would be an excellent option. Its cheap, readly available, and available in a miriad of colors... not to mention the fact that it is somewhat 'polishable' for a more distinct look, and/or holds a texture incredibly well. I think a grey micarta handle with brushed/satin or 'hand rubbed' look on the steel would be a very gracefull yet rugged knife.
Those who love the whole black 'thing' can have black micarta..the arm-chair warriors can have olive... limited type runs can be done in a polished 'ivory' micarta with a spidie logo ... yada yada...
I know the super high tech stuff is neet'o but ask any survivalist and most will tell you to stick to the basics. With some of the Spidies demanding top dollar these days, it would be nice to have a "work horse" that is as durable as it is affordable.

Oh yea... micarta is cheap and easy to come by for after market repairs...

anyway.. thats my meeger and humble opnion...

Colors: Blue, Green, Grey, Maroon, Tan, CF
Handles: Micarta, SS!!!, G-10!!!:D
Steel: 440V, vg-10, new-super-steel?(easy to sharpen, nearly stain proof, and heavy wear resist?)
Size: 3"-3.25", with same proportions as full...
Lock: liner or compression, unless an attempt is made on FRAME locks.

I'd love a 440v, 3.25", SS, Millie, linerlock... PE, SE, 75/25 or 65/35...

The Military jr is back on the front burners. We're working on having a prototype at the Blade Show in May/June.

The plan calls for a Compression Lock nested into G10 scales like the Temperance Jr. Color will be ABB (Anything but black), probably green G10, at least for the proto.

Production steel will more than likely be S30V or VG10 (.125 (3mm) thick). Production will be in the US. The new name for this model is the "Paramilitary" (TM).

Sorry for the delay.

Hey, cool! That had been my idea/suggestion as well. :D :D :D :D :D

Perhaps a 3/4-sized Military should be called "Paramilitary." :)

Of course it needs to be tip-up/down convertible. ;)

Hi Sal,

How will moving to a compression lock affect the weight of the Military? I was wondering particularly about the proposed "Mil Jr" (Paramilitary?), and whether it would weigh less than 4oz? (I like the design of Lil' Temperance but it is rather hefty for its size at 4.5oz)

Paramilitary?! Yes! Make it in green G10, with compression lock, and S30V steel. But may I suggest the option of a reversible clip on this high-end piece for us lefties? Or for those that would want to carry two!

You just read my mind:D

Seriously, that is exactly what I was thinking!

Between this and the ATR Spyderco will probably get the only money I spend on production knives this year. S30V/VG-10 coupled with green G-10 and the Compression lock sounds like a real winner to me. :)
