Any zdp 189 fans out there?

Gotsouthern, I don't think Tom Krein is doing handles on the ZDP Mules anymore as he had two of ten break (mine survived) with minimal pressure when the handles were being put on. If you have on of the softer ones he may do it, but you'd have to ask him. Tom's handles are great on both my M4 and ZDP Mules, they are the same exact quality as what he does on his custom knives.

Oh yeah, I'm a huge ZDP fan. It gets really sharp and DMT's and Japanese waterstones really do a great job at sharpening it. The edge holding is far superior to VG-10 and S30V, it really isn't close when you compare them in edge retention.

Well that sucks. And mine was among the last of the harder original run. Have to figure something else out on that one. I'll have him do my 52100 and S90V ones. Hopefully I can find an M4 Mule one of these days. You seen anybody else's Mule handles you'd recommend?

The edge holding on the ZDP-189's are really good. That said, I find corrosion resistance worse than D2, so it's not really a stainless steel. It is also brittle, in that it doesn't necessarily chip during use but if you drop it from 6 feet there's a good chance it will shatter. Basically it's not chippy but impact toughness is very low. The tip on my Mule ZDP-189 randomly broke during routine use.

i beleive the members when they say zdp stains. my question is:how is this possible with 20% chrome? i thought anything with 16% or higher chrome was fairly stain free.

A lot of the chromium is tied up with the carbon in the form of carbides.

Yup. That. There's just not a lot of chromium left over to prevent corrosion. It's still a stainless, but on the lower end of the stainless scale (though not as low as Cold Steel's VG-1). :)

Try halpern titanium, they have a kit that screws right on.

2 versions available, 1 finished undersize from the profile of the steel handle (to avoid mismatch since knives are not all identical in exact shape), 2 unfinished oversize, so you can screw them on and sand to suit the profile of your knife

Note: the fasteners are $5 extra, handles $20 in green blk or orange. Search for their website.

Also, phillip dobson could make you some, but I have been unable to get in touch with him for a few weeks.

3% carbon, which is virtually unheard of ;)

I have to disagree with the no-chipping bit. Instead of rolling the edge, my ZDP Endura liked to microchip at the edge. This made it take longer to sharpen them out.

And as for the Mules in ZDP-189: there was a known problem with them as announced with Spyderco. If you haven't already, you should be able to get it fixed.
