Bryan- it's a Integral Designs poncho/tarp, Golite, Equinox and others also make them- basically a silnylon 8' x 5' tarp that can do double duty as a poncho

here's a pic of it setup

here's a thread I started awhile back showing several different pitches

That is awesome! I was thinking about switching to tarp only instead of tent for backpacking trips.

How do you keep the bugs away at night, got a bivy?

^ yup- you can kind of see it in the pic, it's main purpose is for rain spray/spindrift (also serves as a ground cloth- waterproof on the bottom, breathable on top w/ a DWR finish)- you just about need a bivy w/ a small (8x5') tarp, but it also has a sewn in noseeum mesh built into the head area to keep bugs at bay- you can also kind of see it in the pic (right hand of the pic)- it has two bungi cords to tie up so it keeps it off of your face

I've used a few things:

Golite nest

A16 - Bug bivy

Outdoor Research dryloft sleeping bag cover - It's like a bivy but it's not fully waterproof and I don't think it's made anymore.
