We all know them, those folks who walk among us who shouldn't touch knives. I'm sure that some of them have even said, "Hey, neat knife, can I see it?"

Do you have any stories of people cutting themselves on your knife?

Yeah....had someone "test" to see it was sharp after I warned them, by running their thumb lengthwise along the blade  that was years ago though. Generally I don't let others hold my knives unless I figure they wont cut themselves after that :D

My F-I-L cuts himself every time I show him a new knife. I don't think he's every cut himself with his own knife though. Go figure...

A couple months ago the data-entry clerk in my office did the same thing as I showed him my new Kershaw Cyclone, but SOMEHOW it didn't cut him. I expected to see blood pouring out of his thumb, but not a drop, and that Cyclone had/has a RAZOR-SHARP blade. After he handed my Cyclone back to me, I schooled him on how NOT to cut yourself with a sharp knife.

an acquaintance borrowed a knife to trim some wax off a candle. i handed it over with "be careful, this knife is sharp". within 2 minutes he cut himself quite well. my best friend and i just shook our heads. now i won't let someone borrow my knives. i will offer to cut what they want cut and they are usually very happy with that. i think lot of people have a fear of knives that makes them not reliable handlers.

The usual case goes like this:

Someone is struggling to open a box or something. I hand them my knife and say, "Try this. But be carefull, it's very sharp." They quickly open the box and then exclaim, "Wow! That knife is shar...." as they run their thumb down the edge, "Ouch! &^$ *&#@ that's (*@#ing sharp!"

I guess if they were having trouble removing a stain from something and you handed them a bottle of solvent and said, "Try this. But be carefull, it's poisonous." they'd drink it.

Repeat of the above - friend asked to borrow knife, "Be careful - it's sharp" - "Really?" - Runs thumb down blade - "Ouch! That's sharp!"

Duh!

I cut stuff for them if not too familiar, or they already know my knives are sharp if they're friends.

Though, I sharpened a folder for one friend who then sliced his thumb open using it to strip cable.

hmmm i think i see how this works... stop telling people knives are sharp, they should know this.

I have never seen anyone cut them self with a knife i hand them but then i also don't tell them it is sharp as they should know that.

Most people I've encountered just don't expect knives to be sharp. Like all the people who cut towards their thumb when peeling foods in the kitchen, people who test the edge the wrong way and so forth.

I did have a friend's girlfriend cut herself and nearly drop a knife on her dog. She wanted to open my Speed Bump after she saw me do it, and I told her be real careful because it has a kick to it. Right when she opened it, it flew out of her hand, sliced her thumb and landed right next to her dog. I expected it to happen, because when I had a Spec Bump for a little while about a year ago she did the exact same thing. *shrug*

after i sharpen the kitchen cutlery i always and everytime insist that my missus should use a cuttingboard when dicing veggies rather then using her thumb as an anvil.

she does tend to use the cuttingblock... AFTER the bleeding has stopped.

One guy I know from high school always shows his contempt for the sharpness of a folder, by partly opening the blade and then pushing it open by laying his thumb on the edge directly. This is rather irritating to a lot of knife owners as he never seems to get cut! (they'd say be careful it's very sharp and he'd push the blade right open with his thumb as if to say NO IT'S NOT!)
So, fed up with his showing off this other guy gets a lock-back Spyderco Manix and strops it on leather till it's sharper than new. Hands it to the thumb-opener and watches as he neatly splits his thumb open. Needless to say that broke him of pushing a blade open on its edge.

A friend of me got her first SAK as a present half a year ago. She was proudly showing everybody all the functions it had: sissors, bottle openener,...
And when everything was opened, she started to close the SAK, and begun with the blade.
But she wasn't realy thinking and forgot to move her fingers away from the closing knife and SNAP a realy deep cut in her fingers with lots of blood.

She knows how stupid that was, and I said that once you 've done something like that, you'll never do it again.but she never wants/dares to use a sharp knife knife again now:(

EDIT: hm now I think about it is this was bit offtopic, since it hasn't happened with my own knife.
Nobody has ever cut himself with a knife I borowed him that I can remember, but I only lend it to people who I think can handle it properly, and for scouting I have a dull knife that I lend to those that aren't that handy with knives.

Reminds me of a canoe trip. A knifeless buddy asked me if I could borrow my knife to make a hot dog stick. I handed him my fixed blade and cautioned him that it's sharp. As he left I mentioned to him that I will be waiting with the electrical tape. He chuckled.

A moment later he returned blood streaming from his index finger asking me for the electrical tape. It looked bad at first so I suggested that maybe I should also twist a wire connector to the end of his finger just to make sure to stem the blood flow:D

However, despite all the blood it wasn't all that bad, but I learned that lending knives is not a good idea, especially on a canoe camping trip long from medical help.

Well if they got your knives bloodied, then as per the myth your knives would be much tougher as it's already been bloodied.

Not a nice topic ... I did it not long ago  A few minutes with my new Manix (last week) resulted in this

I've lost some blood but my finger looks (and works) just fine ...I'll see details on tuesday.

..and my friend came across with serrated blade on my Leatherman Wave a few years ago ...it was very similar to the picture posted. I did't even have time to tell him to be careful and we were searching for first aid kit
