Anybody else carry an illegal knife?

The desire for these things is not inherently selfish. The act of knowingly disregarding rules or laws is.

Out of sheer curiosity, were it illegal to carry any type of knife anywhere you went, would you never carry at all?

Probably. At least until I could find a way to lawfully change the laws.
It already is in many states. There are many restrictions on type of knife and where it may be carried and how it may be carried.
Those that blatantly disregard the law are more a part of the problem than part of the solution.

I respect your conviction and I mean that sincerely. I could get along fine in life without a knife, but I don't think I could not carry at all.

You know every time I hear about the non locking laws some places have It pisses me off. I'd be right there with you bro. bullshit government is stealing our rights a little bite at a time. There has to be a point where you say enough is enough and stop following unjust laws. It's the same with the guns. I'll never hand mine over. I'll bury em in the woods somewhere oiled up and watertight.

Ask any judge. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
By knowingly breaking the law, the person makes himself a criminal. A criminal subject to any law or statute befitting the crime. Exactly the type of people those that would want to legislate our freedoms away from us need in order to do so. They will use your willful disregard to further erode freedoms that the rest of law abiding society wish to help change by legal means. By the act of selfishness (disregarding the law) it only makes it that much harder for those who fight to amend these laws in favor of lawful carry to do so by those legal means.

Thank you for taking the time to rephrase that for me. I see where you are coming from and there is obviously some merit to your position. I still don't fully agree that this is always the most effective solution. Legislation is not always the only (or strongest) voice of the people.

Remember when the federal government imposed a 55 mph national speed limit? It was seen by many as ridiculous and was widely ignored by citizens, officials and even local and state government. The people spoke by collectively rolling their eyes at the law and eventually it was repealed. In this case (as in many) the disregard for the law came well before any actual legislation and did not hurt the folks trying to change the law.

So I look at the knife thing the same way I did the old 55 law. If I'm driving through my home town in Louisiana and I know that even though the letter of the law says 55 the officials are not actually enforcing that, I'm probably not going to worry about it. Same as I wouldn't worry about carrying a particular pocket knife if I was familiar with the local attitude regarding the law. I don't think either would really be considered hardcore civil disobedience. Now if I were driving in another town or state and I didn't know how they enforced their laws I would be well advised to watch my speed and pay attention to what kind of knife I had in my pocket. :)

I don't know. That's just the way I see it. There is probably some truth stuck somewhere in the middle of all our opinions. Thank you again for the courteous response. That was much appreciated.

I'm right there with you man.

This thread will not turn in to a soapbox for political rants or proclamations.

Per "I heard somewhere that if you identify your knife as a tool, then knife laws don't apply. Sounds like an urban myth to me, has anyone ever heard this or used this strategy??"

Not heard of that strategy, but the reverse statement will get you arrested in many places. Many places knives are illegal if the intent is to use it as a weapon. So never declare any knife (or anything for that matter) as being carried for defensive purposes, even if it is for use against an animal. If you are questioned by a cop (don't ever volunteer any information to a LEO) about why you carry your knife, always state that it is a tool and follow up with an example (e.g. box cutter, food preparation at work, to cut seat belts in case of a crash, etc.) If asked "do you know this knife is illegal" sidestep the question with "sorry officer, I'm not a lawyer."

I come from a family with a lot of cops, they hate smart ass answers, so don't try to argue law with any cop.

My family has Irish and Irish-American cops and Irish Revolutionaries (the Brits put a price on my great uncle's head), thus it makes for a twisted perspective on the law. Since one moderator has already chastised another for speaking politics, I won't comment on the rest of the discussion, except "thanks for the support."

Oh no, it's worse than we thought. Smh. BUT Seriously I posted this photo because I was hoping that somebody could ID that blade that Putin is carrying..

Russian Language and Culture was my secondary major so I try to keep up with all things Russian... Putin favors blades from the motherland, particularly Kizlyar, and that one is probably one of their models. I'll try to do some digging.

Update: appears like it is probably a Kizylar "U-5" model knife, that's the closest I could find with what little of the knife we can actually see sticking out there. Sheath looks about right for it too. Slightly different colors on their site but, Putin can probably get a custom. ;)

Next post that remotely goes into politics will be dealt with quite harshly.

That includes quoting a previous post. No politics in this forum is a simple rule. If the reason has to be explained, you should not carry or use a butter knife due to stupidity.

Getting back to the op's question I have probably carried illegal knives at certain points in certain places due to ignorance. That being said my work has a 3. Inch carry rule that I follow strictly, can't afford to lose the cash flow!
