Anybody else switch focus from firearms to knives?

Howdy folks,

Don't get me wrong--I'm still an enthusiast of firearms as well as knives, but a few years ago, the firearms I became most interested in didn't lend themselves to collecting--at least for my beer budget and champagne tastes.

Over the years I was lucky enough to acquire the revolvers/rifles I was most interested in and found myself collecting knives instead.

Cheaper--mostly:D--than firearms, I could get that little rush of a new acquisition more often, and actually use them every day vs. the decreasing time I could find to go to the range.

Anybody else make a switch like this from firearms or from some other interest?

Best,

Heekma

I started with firearms, and over a period of a few years bought just about everything I wanted. Then I transitioned to flashlights, then to knives.

I still buy a flashlight from time to time, though it is rare. And I have a hankerin' for a Ruger SP-101 and a WWII era 1911, but mostly its knives these days.

But everyday I have on me a gun, a light and a knife. So its all good. There are worse things one can spend money on.

I am also a firearms enthusiast. However, it's much more of a hassle to use your firearms than your knives. If you feel like messing around with your knife, all you do is find something to cut and do it. You don't have to leave the comfort of your own home. If you want to do anything with a firearm, you gotta go somewhere like a range, especially if you live in the city like me. You also have to buy ammo not to mention dealing with legal issues of transport in a gun-restrictive state (MD) like mine. Knives are cheaper and less trouble.

I believe in multi-tasking. There's no rule saying you have to choose either guns or knives, so I enjoy both. Two of my most treasured possessions are my Springfield 1911 and my Kerry Hampton KHnutbuster.

I used to be a gun nut (as well as a knife nut). Back before marriage, mortgages, kids, and all of the other things that eat money nowadays. I still had several up to year before last. Then ammo started to skyrocket in price and I wasn't going to pay $30 or more for a box... so I sold most of them. Kept a couple long guns that the wife had bought me for xmas (I'll never get rid of those), couple of pistols, a muzzeloader or two. I should probably reload, but I don't even have the time to actually shoot the guns much, so I don't take the time to reload. Lost my hunting lease last year too, so I don't even really hunt all that much any more.

Besides, I can get a couple (or more) of NICE knives for what a "cheap" Remington 700 is going for nowadays. :D

Here too. I live in Cali, so it's a pain to love guns and not so bad for knives. Still, it's nice to have forums to keep me entertained. I'm on here a lot more than Calguns now, but I still try to hit the range whenever possible.

I love both, but as a poor college student, knives are a lot easier to finance as well as use. It's one reason I also like airsoft. I've never actually made it out to a skirmish, but I love being able to shoot my little BB guns at pop cans.

ditto, 100%. I picked up a red ryder for 11 bucks at the Bargain Cave at Cabelas last night. I've got a closet full of guns but spending hundreds of dollars on ammo every outing is just too much...

I did. I got my C&R FFL a few years ago and went nuts buying surplus military weapons. I bought mausers, mosins, enfields, tt33's, an sks, a garand, a k31, and tons of other guns as well as thousands of rounds of ammo and reloading equipment for the various calibers. That came to a halt this year when I got really interested in knives. I bought a Springfield 1911, a swedish m96 mauser, and a No.1 mk3 Lee-Enfield, then no more guns. I have only been to the gun range twice this year. I used to go with my nephew weekly, but when he moved away last year, I started going alone. Its just not as fun. However, I can use and carry a knife every day. So, here I am now. Buying knives and spending all of my time here instead of gunboards.

I got into guns back when I was trying to get my CCW permit, I spent years reading, studying, and talking about guns on forums like The High Road, Glocktalk, 1911 forums, The Firing Line. I actually came to Bladeforums through Glocktalk. As I acquired all the firearms I was really interested in having I switched interest to knives. Now the only gun related forum I go to is Glocktalk and even then it's just the General Discussion section. Like others have said, knives are more of a practical tool that can be used everyday and most anywhere and the rush from getting a new toy is more easily acquired.

Yeah I was really heavy into both. I'm somewhat of a good shot, so I would take on anyone in a shooting contest. And spend 100s of $s every 2 weeks or so, pistols, rifles, shotguns, I wanted to be the best. But just got Very good. (well enough to where I was asked by neighbors if I was some kind of trick shot, and hired to track and hunt down two rogue bears in Idaho) Word gets around in small towns. My grandfather made knives at a logging camp in 1908-1910 or so. Saw blades and deer antler handles kept the camps with good knives. So I got into it, went to knife hammer ins and learned alot from some very cool people (Bill Moran for one) and took a metalurgy course. But Now that I live in Wisconsin, you can't even shoot a BB gun *In the country* without a hassle. So most all of my lead slinger are gone. (You can see my collection at the what guns/knifes do you have thread) But my knife fever is still runnin Hot. I've had to sell some because of bills, but still once in a wiles try to keep some new ones to test and change around. But jezz I luv em both. But *sigh* most of my leadslingers are gone. But shouldI ever come into some big bucks. I'm gonna Have a HUGE collection.:Dof both. But for now as I don't live in a *Free State* like Idaho, I'm into the Blades. enjoy edgy:thumbup:

Never had a gun. It's actually not evident in most European countries, and to be honest, they don't really interest me that much.
I did always like knives for general utility, got more interested via my cooking hobby, and then my passion really ignited when I read an article about Mcusta knives. Next to Victorinox, I knew hardly a brand before then.

Yep.
As long as my guns still work, I feel very little desire to get more.
But I cannot get enough knives! For some reason, they're just so damn cool.
Of course, having some guns makes shooting those deer and ducks easier.:D
I can't run fast enough to get em with my knives.:p

I used to be a hardcore gunnut, then switched to knives. Now I still have a good balance between guns and knives, but more on the knife side since they are cheaper.

It seems like knives follow almost exactly the formula of 1/10 the price of a gun. $600 will buy you a good value gun like a Glock, whereas $60 will buy you the knife equivalent like a Spyderco Delica 4. $4000 will buy you the highest end semi-custom 1911's like a Wilson Combat Supergrade, whereas $400 will buy you the equivalent with a Sebenza. $1500 will buy you an upgraded HK USP or Sig Sauer, and $150 will get you something like a Benchmade 710 or Spyderco Stretch 2.

This makes a helluva lot of sense, and it explains why I decided to stop trying to collect $1.5-2k Freedom Arms revolvers and switched to BM and Kershaw.

At least my IRA is much happier these days. And I can't remember a time when someone asked to borrow my semi-custom single action revolver to open a box...

I did the gun thing for 20 years or so, then they got too expensive. I'm not keen on all the "super" guns, give me a S&W 686 any day. I still hit the gun shows and will buy something I think I can make money on. I have a dozen guns here and carry one daily, along with my Kershaw mini cyclone and Leatherman Wave.

My guns are getting less love than my knives now. I was even shocked to find some rust on my tanfoglio which I shoot IPSC with. I had to clean it in a hurry. I still shoot most weekends though.
