Anybody else switch focus from firearms to knives?

Used to be real into guns, now almost exclusively knives. I still have all my guns but I spend most of my free time thinking about knives, reading about them, looking at them, using them. One thing's for sure, they are a hell of a lot cheaper to operate! As for initial cost, when I was buying guns, I was spending in the neighborhood of $300 - $400 for a handgun (got my Colt Series 80 Government Model for $325 in 1983!). Now I can easily spend that on a knife. When I see what good guns are going for these days I'm glad I got my collection already filled out to my satisfaction. Another great thing with knives is I can actually use the knife I'm carrying many times a day. With a gun, if you carry, you hope you will not have to use it, and if you are lucky, you never will.

Nope I am going in the opposite direction. I started with knives. I have a nice collection and have moved on to firearms. Not to collect, I shoot them. This is where my fun $ is spent these days.

Like Hawaiian, I went the other way. I've collected knives for years, but within the last several years started picking up the firearms that I wanted. Now, I'm going back in the other direction.

For me, the firearms are for utility. A pistol for carry/truck gun, a rifle for hunting/property defense, and a shotgun for hunting/home defense. I collected all of the ones that I wanted, all of which are vietnam era weapons of a type which were reportedly carried by Army/Navy Special Forces in Vietnam. They're utility items, but older and classier, IMHO.

Knife enthusiasts, and I am one, tend to like the hunt for whatever tickles our fancy just as much as the acquisition. And acquiring knives is ALOT easier, if not always cheaper, than firearms. We can also sit at home and play with our new toys rather than have to drive someplace and spend money feeding our toys like gun enthusiasts. Which, in the long run, means more money to acquire more toys, rather than spending it feeding said toys. Which is why I switched back to knife collecting.

I LOVE both, but I also go from guns to knives. I'll usually stick with one for 6 months to a year, then switch to the other for awhile. I bought a Sig Sauer P238 and a FNH Five-Seven last. Man I love them both !! Back in knife mode now.

Nope, I have a focus on both. I look at knives and guns as tools first and foremost. After I have my essential needs taken care of then I focus on collecting.

i wished i can have a gun. but the territories do not allow fire arms. well unless you got a ton of money..you even have to hire a lawyer to represent you..i quit trying.

I am also a gun enthusiast and sell both guns and knives 5 days a week to pay the bills (Not online, at a brick and mortar). I have always loved both and have had both since I was a wee little lad. Over the years I've acquired a nice accumulation and have most of gun needs covered, except for one more revolver. The area that I live in has had a ton of bear activity lately and I have seen 3 bears just this year myself so I need to get a bear stopper wheelgun to keep in my truck and or pack all the time. However after that I think I'll be pretty content with my gun accumulation. Now if only I could say that about knives...

I like guns too. If I'm not on bladeforums, I'm probably on a gun message board.

These days, I really can't afford either. I need to find some other hobby I can do for free.

They are both great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guns , Knives & beer. May be women. But its not a good idear to collect women.

I am holding fast with knives, and starting to think about guns more.

I own a pistol and a shotgun, and for me that's about all I would need. I live in WI, which has it's pros and cons. I love the wildlife, the nature, the Great Lakes, and the seasons of this state, but we are one of 2 states that does not allow concealed carry. That basically makes collecting guns no fun because you can't do anything with them unless you take them to the range. If I could concealed carry a firearm, I would probably have a few more guns.

:D LOL!!! I did/do collect all of those...... None of them wind up being cheap, in the long run!!!!lol Regards, Steve

I'm a firearm enthusiast and CCW but I confess I buy many more knives than I do guns these days, cost difference being relative. I guess I'm just good with my gun lineup right now. I think there is more variation and technolgy advances in knives than guns. My handguns and long arms are just as good the following year or 5 years after they were released, if not better after break in at least. Secondly, you want proof of your gun's reliability which takes time. A good knife is pretty evident the moment you get to handle it. A new gun isn't necessarily a better gun but that may not be as true with knives due to the advances in production knife building techniques and certainly blade steels.

ive always liked guns & knives equally from day 1, thats been my two hobbies for the last 30 years. at this point i have all the guns i want i see nothing else out there i want or need,+ the fact of the cost of ammo over the last 2 years, & ive also noticed in the last year or two that you cant walk into a local gun store anymore( on long island) because their prices on guns and ammo have gone to a level that is so high, that its insane. ive always bought my stuff on line or out of state & through catalogs about 75% of the time, same with knives.i also seem to have all the knives i ever wanted,so i only buy something that i really like & wont get bored with & sell a few weeks or months later.i learned that there comes a time where you just need to slow down if not stop & enjoy what you already have, instead of buying & buying...

But everyday I have on me a gun, a light and a knife. So its all good. There are worse things one can spend money on.

Yes sir isn't that a fact.....

Now the only gun related forum I go to is Glocktalk and even then it's just the General Discussion section. Like others have said, knives are more of a practical tool that can be used everyday and most anywhere and the rush from getting a new toy is more easily acquired.

Spent much time there as well and check in for the abuse from time to time..

My guns are getting less love than my knives now.

Tell me about it... Although I just bought an old Marlin tube fed bolt and It is a blast to plink, makes it nice being out in the country, just sit on the back porch and shoot to my hearts content..;)

OP, you can easily spend as much on a knife as a gun that's for sure, myself I've found myself USING my "old" knives more and have been rotating my 'supposed' collection to buy more knives in which I can use and abuse.. case and point I have an old CS SRK Carbon V that was never punished until the other day, now the coating is coming off.. man that was fun...

I've learned alot this time around with knives, not 1 will be collected, thus the reason I'm thinning the herd.. I want only users at the moment that fit the bill for the bob or the campsite.... Of course I have sentimental guns handed down to me that I wont sell, but have sold plenty to rebuy guns that I can put to use in the endcase scenario and Glock happens to be my first choice in handguns with an ar or ak for a primary..

A good knife never has to be reloaded, only resharpened!!

Did I mention I love knives??

I started with firearms, and over a period of a few years bought just about everything I wanted. Then I transitioned to flashlights, then to knives.

I still buy a flashlight from time to time, though it is rare. And I have a hankerin' for a Ruger SP-101 and a WWII era 1911, but mostly its knives these days.

But everyday I have on me a gun, a light and a knife. So its all good. There are worse things one can spend money on.

holy... you either have some collecting disorder, or have way too much money, in which case you should give some to me:D:D

I moved off collecting guns after my Uzi, H&K, etc became illegal in
Kalifornia. I still have my 686, Python, and Mini 14(ranch rifle) but I
have no desire to collect felonies along with my guns; sold all the good
stuff years ago.

The only people demonized more than gun owners are smokers...

I started witgh guns....now on the knives. Funny though, I was never really crazy about bayonets :)

since your not using them there guns, you can send em my way, you know where I live.....lol......

I transition from all three of the above, usually it's one knife, one gun, one flashlight per year.....can't wait till next year....

the shooting sports have been a good hobby for me over the past almost 30 years...met some good people, and most of my friends are in or around the shooting sports...started with handgun metallic silhouette, bowling pin, USPSA , Sportsman's Team Challenge, and now primarily 3 gun. If you stay in the sport long enough you have a tendency to acquire the best equipment you can for the job....someone posted a comment on one of the forums about boutique guns...I shot an 1100 for 20years and there is a reason I now shoot a Benelli and have an ACOG on my carbine..I taught high school for the same 30 years, started my school carry with a small Victorinox single blade, and retired with a Army Marksmanship Training (Ft Benning 3gun) engraved Leek...out of school and now retired a BM Elishewitz Aries or Sebenza...
