I had a chance last night to watch the first episode of this new show on Discovery last night.

For those who haven't heard of it, esentially its a staged urban survival reality show. They took 10 people and put them in a simulated disaster situation. the group then has to survive in this abondoned warehouse, having to gather food water and supplies and deal with encounters with other survivors, some friendly and some who are threatening.

If nothing else its and interesting study of how people may react in a real disaster situation, for example how quickly they became distrusting of other survivors and how quickly group dynamics form and problems appear.

I am curious how they are going to deal with physical conflicts between survivors. there have already been minor scrapes with "looters" and The survivors have armed themselves with pipes and other items.

Just wondering if anyone else watched and what they thought.

Damn, forgot all about it. I would have set the tevo to tape it since I work nights.

I had the wife record it but I haven't had a chance to watch. Was it worth the effort?

I was thinking of posting about this show last night after I caught the ending of the show, but I forgot to post :p

It's an interesting show, especially with all of our "TEOTWAWKI" and "TSHTF" threads that we have here. I like that it has a group of people, and not just one or two. Realistically, if anything like that happened, none of us would be "alone." We'd have our families, friends, etc...to worry about and have for support. The last show I saw they made electricity out of a dozen or so batteries, kind of neat if you ask me. I don't know how long the show has been on, so I didn't see how they ended up there or got set up, but I wonder if their B.O.B. has changed now after doing the show :D

Yeah I can't wait to see it myself. As long as it doesn't become huge argument show like the expedition africa.

I watched it. Aside from the bipolar handyman, they seem to be in "kumbayah" mode. Also, I noticed them boiling their water in galvanized steel buckets. . .

I missed the first episode and have yet to find a website where I can watch it, but I do think it would be a show that I would be interested in. I looked at the cast online and they certainly seem qualified enough

i watched it.
Im wondering what they will do against the raiders or whatever (as in will they fight back physically?)

And i agree about the bipolar handyman haha.

I'm hoping they already have the full season taped. If not, group dynamics between the insiders and outsiders could get out of hand. I remember some university psychology study in the 60s with one group of students being prisoners and the other jailers. After only a couple of days they went all Lord of the Flies on each other. I can already see someone getting seriously cracked on the head with a pipe.

I like what I saw of it, BUT my biggest concern is NPOT telling them that the marauders are not allowed to cause then any physical harm.. I can see someone getting busted up badly by a few of those folks.. Other then that it should be interesting, with the inputs from homeland security, and shrinks and such...

Will see what comes about..

Easily the dumbest reality show I've seen in a long time. Its 0% reality and 100% drama. Case in point. When the second group arrives at the warehouse, several of the people inside grab pipes as if they were going to defend themselves. Utter baloney.

These folks probably spent a day signing waivers and other releases and I guarantee you that they all had a clause stating that physical violence would get them tossed. Thus the show is staged. Why grab a pipe if you know nothing bad is going to happen to you.

Where's Lord Humungus when you need him.

According to the narrator, the "marauders" are not supposed to physically harm the "survivors," but the survivors DON'T KNOW that. If there was no threat of physical harm, there would be no point.

It was an interesting enough diversion, AND, the wife thought to DVR it based on her perception of my viewing tastes- not because I asked her to. That's worth the price of admission right there.

Yes they do. Again, all the legalese that thes folks went through to get on the show will have dispensed with that. I understand the announcer said otherwise, but the reality is that they know.

.

This is like saying why do you scream on a roller coaster or get scared in a haunted house. Knowing that its all just pretend can't always overcome your base reactions. Take a minute and put yourself in the scenario it doesent matter what you were told or read beforehand what maters it your perception of your current circumstances.

These people were sleep deprived and isolated, they had been awakened and frightened the night before. They have been in an some form of fight or flight mode for 48 hours. Logic is taking a back seat to Survival instinct at that point.

I also would wonder what the "volunteers" have been told about these encounters.

Besides its kind of Like watching Man-V-Wild its entertaining and half the fun is thinking about what you would do differntly.

I thought it was entertaining at least. I think the angry handy-man is gonna be a problem.

Hot-heads like that are usually bad in any environment or situation.

If they run out of food they ought to eat him first.

Can't say that I do either.

I don't buy it. Its a tv show. They signed an endless amount of waivers and were prepped extensively. If any one of them thinks that there is a chance that the "marauders" (which if you have an IQ above room temperature you know are actors) are going to beat them senseless with sticks and stones then they are brain dead.

Again I don't buy it. Being sleep deprived has nothing to do with flight or fight. Neither does being on a tv show. Its a controlled environment no matter how much the prop department is living out their mad max fantasies.

A chick screaming on the back of a harley just isn't threatening.

Thats an easy one. I'd be adjusting the concertina around the pill box and clearing a kill zone for the mortars at 150 yards.
