Anybody got a Ford Focus?

You know, I am wondering what it is. Why would Ford have so many problems with the Focus made here? It was car of the year two or three times in Europe (Ford also makes Focus in Europe) and enjoys good reputation there. I drove Focus through Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, crossing Alps multiple times. It was a wonderful car, tight, well-finished, quick, good on gas. Why is the US version so crappy then?

Its not. Its US drivers. The only thing Ford really needs to do to make the car more popular here is add 5 thousand dollars to the sticker price and maybe add Some Homer Simpson Wheel well flairs for the Kids like the Toyata Matrix.

Since the redesign in 2005 the Focus has been a excellent car. This years increase in mileage was not do to a advertising gimmick. Ford changed the tune which was all about emissions to a more balanced tune that addressed mileage at a higher priority.

I want to like it, the problem I have is that, it's not a Subaru, but it is one of the US auto makers attempts to say "Hey Look, we can design a small car that dosen't look like a pile of crap" and I think they did pretty well.

Why not get a Subaru?

In some mag? For what year? I know Focus had reliability problem initially, but I haven't heard of any major issues in recent years.
Nimick, I suggest you check this page. There are plenty of discussions there on the very topic you are interested in.

Thank you for that link.
I found a couple of links in this Post #2821 over there that some may be interested in (reproduced below).

Like any product there will always be praise and detractors.

FWIW -
Edmunds.com (which said the Ford Focus was an old design) - surpringingly gave the Focus a couple of 2006 awards -

and what may be most surprising to some -

Lowest TCO coupes

Lowest TCO = Lowest True Cost to Owner -
this seems to run counter to some impressions the Focus is unreliable......

I have a 2002 ZXS automatic with about 45,000 miles on it. The only problem to date has been the replacement of the seat tracks on the front passenger seat. They were a weak point that Ford fixed in the 2003 models, but having a teenaged daughter who flopped into the seat and flipped the recliner did not help the problem. Also, I had to put a new multi-disc CD player in it as she had put one of her home-made discs with a paper label into the thing and the paper label got stuck inside of it.

The car handles very well and performs acceptably for what it is. I would not buy another, however, as Ford has not updated the American version with the new chassis and other improvements that they made to the Euro version. Apparently, they feel that they cost would be too high and Americans would not pay it. Well, that same updated version is sold as the Mazda3 and it sells very well, thank you. That is what I would look into buying were I to replace my Focus, that or a Mazda6 V6 if I could get the same sort of a deal on one that we got on the 2005 Sportwagon that we bought last January.
