i never thought about it untill i started carrying nicer fixedblades as edc but how do yall respond when someone asks if you have a knife they can use? do you hand it to them and let them do what they need to do with it or do ask what for then decide? ive found myself doing the latter and even completed the task for them sometimes.just wondering if im the only one

No. ;)

In my shop when someone needs a knife they ask like this, "Hey Ron, you have a minute?"

:D Anyone that needs a knife and doesn't have one, will surely not appreciate the one they are barrowing. I forget which member had the story about some fool out camping, asking to borrow a nice knife to chop wood kindling on top of rocks or some other foolish venture.

I carry a Vic Super Tinker and give them that. The 'real' knife does not play with others.

I'll usually loan them my EDC Busse which they'd be hard pressed to harm - but if I see them abuse a knife or just about any tool, mine or anyone's, the answer is a definite "No."

That's why I bring my Pendleton Lite to work. If someone needs a knife, they get the $15 one, and they get to buy me a new one if they break it.

good to know im not alone. i like the "if anyone needs a knife and doesnt have one then they wont appreciate the one i hand them" comment

I don't like lending knives. I always ask what they are cutting. I have had several knives returned ruined.

I do just like you do- "What do you need it for?" And then, if it's something I don't mind using my knife for, I do it for them. I love when they get all upset when its something I won't use my knife on. Well, not really, but I think they have a lot of nerve getting pissed because I won't let them mess up my knife when they don't bother to even have one.

Since I traded my Strider SnG for 500,000 white, plastic, disposable, stright edge butter knives, I'm less stingy when it comes to lending a knife.

I usually carry two of them at work. They see me as the knife guy they come to me whenever they need to cut something but they know not to trash my knives. I usually carry a dragonfly and let them use that but if I dont have that on hand I just give them whatever I have on me. Well to my friends of course. Any other person gets the kershaw.

I'm careful of who I let use my knives, usually no one else.

Here's a picture my brother sent me from work yesterday.

Just a random kitchen knife, but whoever did that would never even look at my knives.

If it's someone I know and trust, yeah usually. If it's some one from work or I do not know them, I ask what for and either cut it for them or if they are pissy I say nope sorry with a big smile on my face. I always add a "You know, you wouldn't have to ask if you had one yourself" just for good measures!

I carry a Vic Cadet in addition to my more expensive knives. They get the Cadet.

I ask what they need it for. I have a mechanic friend who is also into knives, he lent his custom damascus folder to a guy at work and he used it to scrape clean a dirty, gritty BBQ grill.

Needless to say, my friend wept when he saw it. Until this day, the guy still doesn't understand why my friend got so worked up over it.
